Hello

I have an Acer Aspire 5100 laptop running Windows XP Home. All microsoft updates current to Sept 15.
Using Avira Antivirus, Malwarebytes, Super Anti Spyware, Spyware Blaster, Spybot Search and Destroy, CCleaner and Windows Defender. All updates current to Sep 15. Windows Defender has disappeared from the task bar.

Problems are as follows: all started on Friday, Sept 17 in the morning, no problems before that at all
- Ccleaner had entries in registry that looked very suspicous (one included nqagoxiw in the entry)
- cannot get to Windows Update site (page says Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage)
- could not get Avira, etc to update (some have since started updating)
- could not get to forums page (redirect to Godzilla Malware or something close to that) - I connected via the cached link so I could print the instructions
- cannot load Task Manager
- could not get Control Panel to work (It is now working)
- if I try to run Avira or Malwarebytes in safe mode the computer shuts down (also shut down once in regular mode when I was running Malwarebytes)
- fixed in time debugger keeps popping up
- messages saying Windows Explorer has encountered a problem (could not save error message so this a summary of the message)
- gmer runs but freezes and I cannot save the log or copy it - indeed I have to shut down with the power button as laptop becomes totally nonresponsive (I hand copied the last fews lines of the log that were displayed and have posted those at the bottom of this message)

Friday I started having a window pop up for Just in Time Debugger no matter what it would come back. Then my Avira guard started going crazy - literally dozens of detection windows - close one and more would pop up. I could not get Avira to update. Ran Avira and it found
TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen3 Trojan in System Volume Information\ restore ....
I quarantined it. Problems were still there. Had to turn off Avira guard to get anything else done to try to fix problem. Guard is running now and seems to be finding nothing (I am suspicious of that). I have run Windows Onecare free scan and it found malware that it reported it was unable to remove but there was no information about it.

Malwarebytes would not update but here is a copy of the log

hello

still here - the laptop in question has not been powered up in about 5 days as my Avira guard went nuts and indicated that I had over 1700 viruses. I shut it off and just waited for assistance.

Thanks so very much

It looks like a very infected machine.

Please run the following tool
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.

  • Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.

  • Go to Start > Run (Or you can hold down your Windows key and press R) and copy and paste the following into the text field. (make sure you include the quote marks) Then press OK.

    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l report.txt

  • Now click Start Scan.
  • If Malicious objects are found, ensure Cure is selected then click Continue > Reboot now.
  • Click Close
  • Finally press Report and copy and paste the contents into your next reply. If you've rebooted then the log will be found at C:\

not sure where to find the report but this is what I found in the TDSskiller

when I ran the scan it found one object and cured it with a reboot / I have to turn avira as it goes nuts with detections (Pedelac, etc)

also it Windows Installer keeps popping up (no other information on what it is installing) - I have been cancelling Windows Installer

If you've rebooted then the log will be found at C:\

Please run Combofix next

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop making sure you rename it comfix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Comfix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

good morning

I looked in the C:\ for the TDSSkiller and did not find it there - the one that I pasted in came from opening the TDSSkiller icon and selecting report. That log now shows in C:\ - hope it was the right one.

ran combofix and here are the results

quick question before I forget

in Avira I currently have 6797 quarantined files - should anything be done with them? I am not sure if they are all viruses or what they are?

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the box below into it:

QUOTE
File::
c:\windows\Hrupog.dat
c:\windows\Xlohililunutow.bin
c:\windows\system32\drivers\eogok.sys
c:\documents and settings\Administrator\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\qoofa.exe

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as Comfix.exe (called ComboFix.exe in the below graphic)

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

If the program requests for you to update Combofix then click Yes.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

I'm afraid I have very bad news.

Your system is infected with a Win32/Ramnit.A, a file infector with IRCBot functionality which infects .exe, and .HTML/HTM files, and opens a back door that compromises your computer. The infected .HTML or .HTM files may be detected as Virus:VBS/Ramnit.A. Win32/Ramnit.A!dll is a related file infector often seen with this infection. It too has IRCBot functionality which infects .exe, .dll and .HTML/HTM files and opens a back door that compromises your computer. This component is injected into the default web browser by Worm:Win32/Ramnit.A which is dropped by a Ramnit infected executable file.

-- Note: As with most malware infections, the threat name may be different depending on the anti-virus or anti-malware program which detected it. Each security vendor uses their own naming conventions to identify various types of malware. With this particular infection the safest solution and only sure way to remove it effectively is to reformat and reinstall the OS.

Why? The malware injects code in legitimate files similar to the Virut virus and in many cases the infected files (which could number in the thousands) cannot be disinfected properly by your anti-virus. When disinfection is attempted, the files often become corrupted and the system may become unstable or irreparable. The longer Ramnit.A remains on a computer, the more files it infects and corrupts so the degree of infection can vary.

Ramnit is commonly spread via a flash drive (usb, pen, thumb, jump) infection where it copies Worm:Win32/Ramnit.A with a random file name. The infection is often contracted by visiting remote, crack and keygen sites. These type of sites are infested with a smörgåsbord of malware and a major source of system infection.

In my opinion, Ramnit.A is not effectively disinfectable, so your best option is to perform a full reformat as there is no guarantee this infection can be completely removed. In most instances it may have caused so much damage to your system files that it cannot be completely cleaned or repaired. Further, your machine has likely been compromised and there is no way to be sure the computer can ever be trusted again. It is dangerous and incorrect to assume the computer is secure even if your anti-virus reports that the malware appears to have been removed.

Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of malware, the best course of action is to wipe the drive clean, reformat and reinstall the OS. Please read:
QUOTE
Whenever a system has been compromised by a backdoor payload, it is impossible to know if or how much the backdoor has been used to affect your system...There are only a few ways to return a compromised system to a confident security configuration. These include:
• Reimaging the system
• Restoring the entire system using a full system backup from before the backdoor infection
• Reformatting and reinstalling the system
Backdoors and What They Mean to You

This is what Jesper M. Johansson at Microsoft TechNet has to say: Help: I Got Hacked. Now What Do I Do?.[quote]The only way to clean a compromised system is to flatten and rebuild. That’s right. If you have a system that has been completely compromised, the only thing you can do is to flatten the system (reformat the system disk) and rebuild it from scratch (reinstall Windows and your applications).

Hello

I use my laptop for genealogy, reading the Calgary Herald (our local newspaper) and emails (via webmail) and have never had a problem. I do not have music or videos or filesharing on it. I do not use jump drives, etc - I do have an external hard drive for back up. Is it likley that the date files and photos stored on there are infected?

The last thing that I did before my laptop went haywire was go to youtube to show my daughter a video for an older song that has been remade (Frankie goes to Hollywood - Relax). Then I shut it off, went to bed and the next morning when it booted up things went rapidly downhill.

Thank you very much for your assistance with this troubling issue.

I have ordered restore disks for my laptop (we never made the recovery disks wacko.gif ) so when they arrive I will reformat it and be even more careful.

Thank you again and please let me know if my back up external drive may be compromised.

Sincerely

Thelma

Yes, sorry to be the bearer of bad news. The Desktoplayer.exe file being deleted by Combofix confirmed it.

If the external drive has been plugged in to the infected machine since the PC was compromised then the external drive may have been hit too.

The only way to check this would be to plug in the drive to the infected machine and run Combofix, which I don't recommend because it could infect the drive even if it were clean before. You will have to reformat the drive to be absolutely sure this does not happen.

Thanks for the PM. There appears to be trojan activity again.

Please run Combofix
