I never have this problem before but yesterday when I try to copy a few files from my D drive over to a USE flashdrive, the windows explorer hangs and a error message pops up saying that the windows has stopped responding. I clicked on the "Shut down program" and the trasfers were forced to stop.

I am not sure what is causing this problem and I have all the latest windows patches applied.

Also, would the forced close down of the transfer cause any distrimental effect to both my D drive and my USB flashdrive?

Not likely.

Try same USB stick on another computer and see, if it works fine there.
