Hello All,

Due to repeated browser hijacking/redirects, I performed a scan using TDSSKiller. I have attempted several times to both "quarantine on reboot" and "cure on reboot" to no avail. I have included the log from the scan here. I have viewed other topics in this forum and elsewhere, and downloaded/installed/implemented several other AV/Rootkit programs without success. Please help me if you can. Thank you.

Steven

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is Known as a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit <--please read

What this virus does do.
QUOTE
Functionality
The functionality that the Trojan exhibits implies that it has been designed with profit-making as its primary objective. Making money from the Web typically involves generating Web traffic, installing pay-per-install software and also by generating sales leads for other Web sites and services of a dubious nature. It tries to achieve its objective by employing an array of techniques to try and make the user participate in these income-generating activities.

What the virus can do.
QUOTE
Backdoor.Tidserv is a Trojan horse that uses an advanced rootkit to hide itself. It also displays advertisements, redirects user search results, and opens a back door on the compromised computer.

This "could" allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

the scan went fine, the computer is running about the same as usual.
i have not tried any google searches/clicked on any results to see if it still redirects to same spam pages.
should i attempt that yet?

i don't really use this computer for anything other than storage and just messing around online. i never use it for banking or anything involving secure information. it would be nice to have it squeaky clean and all, but i'd just like to be rid of this particular rootkit . anything else removed would just be gravy.

Greetings

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

CODE
File::
c:\windows\system32\e3c4A.sys

Driver::
e3c4A

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. report from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Gringo

Hello

Print out these instructions to use while in the Recovery Console:
    1.Restart your computer.
2.Before Windows loads, you will be prompted to choose which Operating System to start.
3.Use the up and down arrow key to select Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
4.You must enter which Windows installation to log onto. Type 1 and press 'Enter'.
5.At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following bolded entries, and press 'Enter'
      fixmbr

after you have completed this step please rerun combofix and let me know how the computer is doing

I got as far as step 3.

The screen said "Starting Windows Recovery Console" and the bar under it went from dotted to solid, then all activity stopped for ten minutes (no noise from PC, no blinking light) so I came back here. Am I not waiting long enough or should the option to Type 1 and press 'Enter' have come about right after I selected Microsoft Windows Recovery Console?

Hello

it should be fairly quick so I want you to do it this way

Burn recovery console cd
  • Download recovery_console_cd.zip file to your drive and extract it to its own folder (c:\recoverycd for example).
  • Download floppy disk setup package xp home for your operating system (XP home) and save it to the folder you extracted the zip to.
  • Rename the floppy disk setup package to Bootdisk.exe.
  • Insert a blank cd into your burner.
  • Double-click the RecoveryCD.bat file and follow the prompts to burn a cd that will allow you to boot to the recovery console.

Boot into recovery console
  • insert the cd that we made into cd player
  • restart the computer
  • screen will say "Windows set up" just wait
  • at the welcome screen press "R"
  • type 1 to enter c:\windows
  • type in the following and press enter
    • fixmbr
