My problem started as (to the best of my knowledge) Firefox redirecting me to webpages that I did not choose to see. For example, I would google a topic, click my desired link, and be directed to a nondescript search engine with my search as the topic. Otherwise, I may click on any various link in any site and a popup will appear for some type of Google job or stock news. This has been happening on sites that do not normally do anything like that. I have learned that this is a pretty common problem and the virus (or whatever it is) can open the door to more problems. I will describe suck problems below.
In addition to the initial symptoms, my computer has told me that, "You are infected! Scanning now!" This came from a program that popped up "Antivirus 2010 Security Suite." I did not install anything of the sort. I canceled the action and exited the program as best I knew how.
Another problem I have been having is that Windows has not been allowed to download or install updates. Security Center tells me to update my definitions etc..., but when I try to do that, it gives me the error message: "Wondows cannot update." And then some blurb about sending problems to Microsoft. The update icon is now in my tray telling me that it cannot update constantly.
The last thing that I am aware of that happened was, when I booted up, my background was black ant a message was in red letters (set as my background) that the computer was infected. I don't remember the exact message and it has only happened once.
Thanks for the help in advance!!

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
  1. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  2. Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:
Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
    • The application window will appear
    • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
    • Click Yes to continue
    • A 'Finished!' message will appear
    • Click OK
    • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:
Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link1
    Link2
    Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.
    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
      • DDS.txt
      • Attach.txt
    • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
    • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
    • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Scan With RKUnHooker
  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth,. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

information and logs:
In your next post I need the following
      1.logs from DDS
      2.log from RKUnHooker
3.let me know of any problems you may have had

Yes I do still need help. I was trying to download defogger yesterday from your link and it was giving me the typical, "Could not be desplayed" page. I have JUST downloaded and will shortly be running the tests as per your instructions. Thanks a lot for your help!!

I had no problems with the tests. I have had another bogus antivirus program installed on my computer, but my anti virus got it.

Here are the logs:

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is Known as a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit <--please read

What this virus does do.
QUOTE
Functionality
The functionality that the Trojan exhibits implies that it has been designed with profit-making as its primary objective. Making money from the Web typically involves generating Web traffic, installing pay-per-install software and also by generating sales leads for other Web sites and services of a dubious nature. It tries to achieve its objective by employing an array of techniques to try and make the user participate in these income-generating activities.

What the virus can do.
QUOTE
Backdoor.Tidserv is a Trojan horse that uses an advanced rootkit to hide itself. It also displays advertisements, redirects user search results, and opens a back door on the compromised computer.

This "could" allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

First, thanks so much for the help.

When I ran CombFix, everything went well until after the first reboot. Right after I put in my pw to open Windows and the window for the scan, during the second "process" everything stopped for the longest until an error came up saying that "PEV.cfxxe failed." (Generic-looking Windows error.) Another error came up later and I ended up having to reboot and try the whole scan again. I did that and got the same error about pev.cfxxe but this time the whole process finished. Upon final reboot, I tried to open a Firefox browser and got this (new) error: "Illegal attempt on registry key marked for deletion." I tried to open Explorer and could not do that either. It is my experience that rebooting Windows solves around 75-90% of the problems I have with it. So I rebooted and it now lets me open Firefox, although it was no longer set as default browser. I'm sure that this is just a result of the scan. That is all there is to report about ComboFix. There is more at the bottom.

The log for ComboFix is as follows:

As for how the computer runs now:
I looked through the stuff that the log came up with and I saw indications of ALL the problems I have been having. Bogus antivirus and antispyware was detected and is not popping up any more. "Windows can't check for updates" indication in tray is no longer coming up. Various failed process notifications not popping up any more. I no longer am redirected (for the moment) when Googling things. However, when I clicked a Google link, instead of navigating right to it, there seemed to be a redirection of some kind in the tab display. Since I tried it first, it stopped doing that.
So I'll keep an eye on stuff and make sure everything is running properly.
You mentioned that I can never be secure on this computer? So does this mean that I can't do any private tasks (banking, payments, etc...) on this machine? This would put me in a tight spot. Is there a way I can be secure? What are the risks from here on out? How can I prevent this happening in the future (I understand from a "driveby download." How can I avoid this?

Thanks so much!

Hello

So does this mean that I can't do any private tasks (banking, payments, etc...) on this machine?
I would watch very closely for a while, change my online passwords and let me bank know of the possibilty of what can happen.

Is there a way I can be secure?
The only 100% way is to reformat the computer

What are the risks from here on out?
There are those that believe that any risk is to much and their are those that believe that with todays routers and how common this virus is that any one person is not at very much risk.

How can I prevent this happening in the future (I understand from a "driveby download." How can I avoid this?
I will give you some advice and some things to read when we are finished

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

CODE
File::
c:\windows\system32\drivers\rjovsogd.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\jogltisj.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\eqcvzkwd.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\jaoayucr.sys

Folder::
c:\windows\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\{284D5D9E-42A6-4F14-B42E-3D8C5300B367}\

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. report from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Gringo

Had the same "PEV.cfxxe stopped working" error. Other than that, it was smooth.

Here is the log.

Hello

:P2P Warning!:

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented and malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares on to your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly, your computer may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to a file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Please read these short reports on the dangers of peer-2-peer programs and file sharing.

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs
    1. click on start
    2. then go to settings
    3. after that you need control panel
    4. look for the icon add/remove programs
    click on the following programs

    Adobe Reader 8.1.4
    Ask Toolbar
    Funshion
    Java™ 6 Update 2

    and click on remove

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.
If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.

Your Java is out of date.

It can be updated by the Java control panel
  • click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup) -> Update Tab -> Update Now.
  • An update should begin;
  • follow the prompts

    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):
  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.

  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.

    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Hello

The only problem I am still noticing is that "Windows cannot check for updates." Generic-looking speeck bubble coming from my tray.
can you give more more information about this

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

There has been a speech bubble in my tray that tells me that Windows cannot update for about a week to a week and a half. It is gone now and Windows updated. It has not reappeared for the past two days.

I don't think this is right. I followed your instructions and this is the log they gave me. I am going to re-run the scan but this is what they gave me.

The log is a follows:

ESETSmartInstaller@High as CAB hook log:
OnlineScanner.ocx - registred OK
esets_scanner_update returned -1 esets_gle=53251
esets_scanner_update returned -1 esets_gle=53251

It said they found 8 threats so that looks a little sparse. I'll post back if the new scan is more fruitful.

So... I rescanned and it came up with the same thing under the log file. I don't know if I am dong something wrong or if that is the right thing or what. I did copy a list of the threats, however and I'll put them here in case that helps you.
