Hello!

A file called aawsepersonal.exe was found infected (in my programme files folder).
AVG -free version- traced this trojan horse (Trojan horse downloader.agent.AQN) and have quarantined it, but I am not really sure if this is enough.
I have performed scans using Norton Antivirus, Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware but nothing more was found.

I hope you can help me out here.
This is my log:

Hi and Welcome to bleeping computer!! Posted Image

My name is David Posted Image

Please do both of the following before we start if possible!:

1) Please print off these intructions - they will be needed later when internet access is not available.
2) Save these instructions in word/notepad to the desktop where they can be easily found for the same reasons as above.

There is a bit to do on the log - i can almost guaruntee ewido will remove something - it's also a good free tool to keep in your arsenal!

Please download ewido security suite it is a free version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck.
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful") Posted Image
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Close ewido security suite.

Post a new HJT log and the ewido log at the end! :flowers:
David

Hello David!

Thanks for your kind response.

While waiting for your answer, I restarted my pc in safe mode and I ran both my antivirus programmes as well as Spybot S&D and Ad-aware, but no infection has been reported except for some negligible items in Ad-aware.
I deleted them anyway.
The other thing that happens is that Norton Internet Security Professional does not allow me to open webpages. When I disable it instead, I can access the web normally. I am not quite sure whether this has to do with an attack or whether it is my fault and has to do with a change I may have made in Norton's settings.
And one last thing:
When running on MSN messenger and even when it is closed sometimes, a window pops up prompting me to visit a website so as to scan my computer because some problems -are supposed to?- have occured.
I did not enter that website at all.
That's all!

Download WindPFind

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe.
When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to start scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while.
When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.

Hello again!

My WinPFind log is the following:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

AVG -free version- traced this trojan horse (Trojan horse downloader.agent.AQN) and have quarantined it, but I am not really sure if this is enough.

Can you give a file path?

Click Here to do a Panda online scan
  • If it asks you install active x controls click Yes
  • if a box comes up telling you to install the program also click Yes
  • Make sure you tick Disinfect automatically under Scan Options
  • complete the scan and post the log that you can save afterwards in the same way you did the HJT log.
  • It is normal for it to take a reasonable time to complete

Hello again!

I ran Panda Activescan and no viruses were found.
This is what appears at the and of the scan:

Detected Disinfected
Virus 0 0
Spyware 0 0
Hacking Tools 0 0
Dialers 0 0
Security Risks 0 0
Suspicious files 0 0

I cannot find any other details to copy here.

As for the trojan horse AVG recognised the other day, I accidentally deleted it from the quarantine list and I cannot find the file path anymore.
Sorry...
I thought I could get rid of the trojan that way and then I realised that I only managed to delete it from the list AVG keeps for quarantined items.

Thanks once again for your effort.

Lily

As Panda, ewido and WinPfind haven't found anything to do with it, and as AVG has stopped alerting you of it, i would imagine it has gone!

Let's make 100% sure:

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Ok, that's all good!

Clean Log!! Posted Image
How's everything running? or  ?

Now turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore. In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

How's everything running? or  ?

That's good to hear!
Thank you David!!

Well, everything seems to work properly and that annoying MSN window has stopped appearing the last couple of days, however Norton Internet Security is not actually working properly.

I cannot access the internet when it is enabled, therefore I disable it all the time in order to work online.
Do you have an idea what is happening here?

This must be due to an action I took a few days ago when I was asked by Norton to allow or block something and I blocked it!
Do you know where I can find and change the actions I have taken?
I cannot find anything relevant by myself.
