Unable To Install/very Slow To Install Anything

Ok I am stuck trying to sort out the in laws PC. The main problem is that I can't install anything into/onto IE6. For example if I go to the Windowsupdate page, the security certificate pops up, I click yes, and then IE6 freezes. This happens for anything that I try to install in the same way (Macromedia Flash etc). I have no idea what to do to fix this.

Not sure if it makes any difference but I had to remove the hclean32.exe Trojan from the PC already today.

I tried to install XP SP2, it gets to the "Inspecting current setup" and just hangs. I ran HiJack This and here is the log:

I see that you are installing service pack 2. Was that successfully installed?

No, its one of the things that gets stuck while trying to install. It gets to "Inspecting Current Setup" (Can't remember the exact wording) and then just hangs. This is the same whether in Normal or Safe mode.

Hate to ask it, but I have to. Do you have a legit copy of windows?

No problems asking, and yes it is a legit copy of Windows. I know the error that comes up when trying to install SP2 on a not so legit copy of Windows.

This is something different, I can't actually install anything. For example right now its trying to install an automatic update and has just been hanging for about 30 minutes and not actually installed anything.

I have admin rights to the PC, and can't figure out what is causing the problem.
