Google had fired an employee in July for spying on teen's Gmail, Google Chats, and Google Voice accounts. David Barksdale was employed as a Site Reliability Engineer at Google's Kirkland, Washington office. As this position is responsible for troubleshooting problems related to Google products, he had access to other user's accounts. Gawker reports that the reasons Barksdale accessed the teens accounts was not meant for sexual purposes, but rather to impress them with his so-called power. Gawker stated that:
"In an incident this spring involving a 15-year-old boy who he'd befriended, Barksdale tapped into call logs from Google Voice, Google's Internet phone service, after the boy refused to tell him the name of his new girlfriend, according to our source."
As more and more companies are moving their email infrastructure to Google for Apps, the fact that someone not related to their organization has full access to their private content is scary. I am sure Google can come up with a better system to give people temporary access to people's accounts rather than just giving full access to certain individuals.
