Posted 15 September 2010 - 11:49 AM

I realize I haven't done the proper post. I have quickly skimmed the first post guide, and I'm sorry I don't have the evil computer with me. I'm at home on lunch and am trying to solve a computer at work.

A coworker came to me saying his computer requests a password on restart. And sure enough on startup a rather official looking popup says something about protected files, and requests a password. I wish I had more exact info, but I'm just throwing out a quick post hoping for some tips after work, as I may bring the PC home tonight and fix it after work.

Anyrate, I reboot in safe mode, and Spybot or Malaware won't run. Clicking their exe's simply does nothing. As if you didn't just try to run the file. I found in the TCP/IP settings the DNS servers were set to some 93.x.x.x numbers, where the computers at work use a 192.x.x.x DNS I believe. I set that to automatic DNS which helped IE with some of its random webpage redirects. Also in IE's settings the LAN settings weren't setup for proxy, nor where they setup to automaticly detect settings, which I'm used to seeing. I ticked auto there too. IE still sends you to spyzilla or AOL ads, or just random redirects when googling something useful: like this forum will not come up on the computer.

Anyhow, I'm out of time for lunch and can post more info later, but I did manage to get a HJT log from the PC. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks.

I just wanted to post a thank you. Your forum/website is very informative and well presented. I wanted to let the helpers who are helping folks fix their PC's that I believe my woes are cured. After using Windows Restore to a date before the symptoms showed, to no positive result, I used Avira AntiVir Rescue System's boot CD to run a scan on the computer. It found 2 uglies and renamed them:

'backdoor program BDS/TDSS.A.1' and 'TR/Rootkit.Gen3' which was appearantly redbook.sys.

It appears GMER spotted redbook.sys and flagged it as a possible naughty file. Anyrate, clever website, and I've learned a lot here. Perhaps the info in this post can be helpful to others.

Afterward Spybot could finally be ran on the computer and only found 2 additional somewhat mild looking bugs.

It should also be noted this paticular XP machine appears to not have had any Windows Updates performed for a VERY long time. There were dozens and dozens of updates which I performed after Avira cleared up those 2 baddies. Not sure if the infection could have been prevented by keeping Windows current, but I'll let the guy at work know to keep up with the updates.

Anyhow if anybody was working on my case, thanks very much for your efforts, I'm sorry if I caused unnessisary work for you.
