I have a problem with Google redirecting - like many others in this forum.

I have tried a few things to address the problem but I can't fix it and hope that an expert here will be able to
guide me to a solution.

I am running XP SP3, AVG Free 9.0 updates and runs every day.
I use SuperAntiSpyware and MBAM every 3 or 4 weeks, updating them before running.
I have used SpyBot S&D in the past but turned it off because the TeaTimer was hogging memory.

I don't recall everything that happened but took a number of screen shots yesterday.

The first issue was that AVG Resident Shield reported:
File Local Settings\Temp\1biq.exe Infected with Trojan Horse VB.AHPG
and
File .COMMgr\complmgr.exe Infected with Trojan Horse SHeur3.AXXW

I ran SuperAntiSpyware:
While it was running AVG popped a window to say that the first of the two threats above was accessed and named SuperAntiSpyware as the Process.

When SAS ended it had found:
Rogue.AntiMalwareDoctor
Trojan.Agent/Gen
Trojan.Agent/Gen-Deskryp[New]
Trojan.Agent/Gen-Falint
I quarantined all of them (and the adware that it found).

When the quarantine task was running AVG then found
Trojan Hose Vundo.LO in the Quarantine folder (again it named SAS as the process).

SAS asked for a reboot to complete but I ran AVG first.
Before AVG finished the power went off.
When I restarted the computer I had to go through Check Disk.

Being concerned about the time AV programs can take I decided to delete temp files and do
some other tidying up with CCleaner.

I ran SAS and AVG again - at this time nothing particularly dangerous was found.
The next thing that happend was that 146W5A.com (a font library) wanted to access the Internet.
Zone Alarm reported it and I chose to Deny access.

I ran MBAM and it reported Malware in 146W5A.com and I removed it.

Then IndexSearch.exe tried to access the Internet - I denied it with Zone Alarm.

I ran AVG again and it identified Generic19.MYI in lots of different folders with programs such as
ScanSoft, QuickTime, Java, Adobe, Citrix, AVG, MBAM and my Internet Usage Meter as infected
by Generic19.MYI

My guess is that all of these programs are in my start up (HijackThis nots all of them).

Zone Alarm found Windows Explorer wanted to access the Internet. I said deny.
This has happened more times today - each time I chose Deny but it asks again after each reboot.

Another run of SAS found Trojan.Agent/Gen-Virut in the Recycler.
I moved it and rebooted.

I deleted temp.rwxi but felt I could not delete other things that related to programs which I use regularly.
I decided to call it a night and shutdown.

This morning when I rebooted AVG started - again finding multiple instances of Generic19.MYI
with infections in files and related registry keys.
It also found the same trojan in the recycler and multiple files in C:\System Volume Information\_restore

Today I have removed Citrix and updated Java to the latest level.

I uninstalled some other programs and made a few changes based on what I saw in HijackThis and
comparison to previous log output.

Another run of MBAM found P2P.Worm in a file and Trojan.Downloader in a registry item.

The Google Hijacking is persisting.

Time for me to call on the experts...

I have attached the output from DDS.

It shows d3d9caps.dat and .COMMgr as new programs and my searching in this forum show these items
are included in many of the Google redirection incidents.

I downloaded GMER from your link and extracted it but when I double-clicked on the .exe file it caused a reboot.

Gringo,

I am very happy that you are helping me.

I have taken the steps that you nominated without any problems, contents attached below.
I have uploaded the zipped Attach file (as DDS said).

My different AV tools found things after I reported the original infection.
MBAM found windows\system32\d3d9caps.dat
ZoneAlarm found ZeuS.Zbot.aoaq and started the MS Malicious Software tool (Aug 2010)
Malicious Software Removal found Win32/Alureon.H
AVG found 4 files it marked as Generic2_C.AHYA (twice) and .AHYB and .AHYC in Java folders
On another day AVG found Win32/Patched.DX

I was able to run GMER after my original post (had to go into Safe Mode to do it) the ark.txt file was very short so I have included it.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Gringo,

I'm sorry to say that I am having problems.

I have downloaded ComboFix and loaded it onto the sick computer.

There are two issues that I cannot overcome. Hopefully you will have some advice.

I can't get Recovery Console from my Windows XP CD because it is SP2 and I have since put SP3 on the machine.
I get a message saying:
Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD.
To erase the newer version and install the older version, restart the computer, boot from this CD and follow the
instructions for a new installation.
I don't want to have to go back to SP2 and hope that is not going to be necessary?
The ComboFix Tutorial says if the Recovery Console is not installed, I can click yes to let ComboFix download & install it.
Should I rely on this option rather than try to install the Recovery Console first?

I can't completely kill AVG Free 9.0.
I've followed the advice in the link to temporarily disable AV (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
I can shut down the three functions in that AVG user interface but when I check the task Manager there are still 7 avg processes running.
I can use end process to stop 6 of them but avgrsx.exe will not end.
I tried running msconfig and turning off the two AVG Services that I could see - that doesn't stop avgrsx.exe starting up.
ComboFix still thinks AVG is running and warns against continuing.

My Zonealarm firewall is easy to shut down from within the program. This ends the zlclient.exe process.

I have spent hours searching the net trying to solve these problems without success.
My only thought on AVG is to go to add/remove programs and remove it.
I can reinstall later and add updates - I think the only downside is that I will lose my history.

Hello

I can't get Recovery Console from my Windows XP CD
Just have the computer be connected to the internet and Combofix will download what it needs

I can't completely kill AVG Free 9.0.
if you can't turn it off then go ahead and run it anyway

Gringo,

Thank you for the quick response and good advice.

I reconnected to the Internet and all ran as you said.
The Recovery Console downloaded.
I was watching the 50 stages run through.
I noted winlogon.exe and explorer.exe files were restored
then the last line was about deleting files and the machine rebooted.
I did not see the screen about "Preparing Log Report".

After the reboot I waited 5 minutes and couldn't see any disk activity before I logged back in.
There is no sign of ComboFix running now and no log file at C:\ComboFix.txt
There is a ComboFix folder and also a QooBox folder with new files (or updates)
Some of the contents date back to when I ran ComboFix in 2007.

I am sorry I don't have the log that you asked for?
What should I do? Run ComboFix again? Are any of the files in the QooBox folder going to help you?

Gringo

I ran ComboFix again.
I was not connected to the internet.
I had stopped Zone Alarm and the only part of AVG that was running was the avgrsx.exe process.

It started fine and this time I saw the screen with the bar chart that said it was backing up the registry.
It ran to 50 stages in a total of 11 minutes.
This time there was no mention of files being restored (like I saw with winlogon.exe and explorer.exe yesterday).
The last thing I saw was "Deleting Files" and the machine rebooted.

I waited 15 minutes before logging in and there is no sign that ComboFix is running.
There is nothing new in the ComboFix folder, no log.
A few of the files in QooBox updated.

Do you want me to try again with ComboFix? Is there any other way to run it? Renaming? Safe Mode?

Hello

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.

Greetings

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

CODE
RenV::
c:\program files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl .exe
c:\program files\AVG\AVG9\avgtray .exe
c:\program files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM .exe
c:\program files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched .exe
c:\program files\Internode\MUM~1~1 .exe
c:\program files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam .exe
c:\program files\QuickTime\qttask  .exe
c:\program files\Scansoft\PaperPort\IndexSearch .exe
c:\program files\Scansoft\PaperPort\pptd40nt .exe
c:\program files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SUPERAntiSpyware .exe

Driver::
wuhijyps

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. report from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Gringo

Gringo,

I stayed in Safe Mode and had no problems.
I dropped the custom file on top of the cat and ComboFix ran.
There was a reeboot but ComboFix continued.
Here is the content from the logfile.

Hello

:P2P Warning!:

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented and malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares on to your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly, your computer may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to a file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Please read these short reports on the dangers of peer-2-peer programs and file sharing.

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs
    1. click on start
    2. then go to settings
    3. after that you need control panel
    4. look for the icon add/remove programs
    click on the following programs

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 7
    Java™ 6 Update 3
    Java™ 6 Update 5
    Java™ 6 Update 7
    Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

    and click on remove

Clear your Java Cache
  • click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
        Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):
  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :
I would like you to rerun MBAM
  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Download HijackThis
  • Go Here to download HijackThis Installer
  • Save HijackThis Installer to your desktop.
  • Double-click on the HijackThis Installer icon on your desktop. (Vista and Win 7 right click and run as admin)
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log From MBAM
    2. report from Hijackthis
    3. let me know of any problems you may have had
    4. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo,

Thanks again for the fantastic help that you are giving me.

P2P warning noted.
I removed the Java programs and cleared the cache.
TFC ran and cleaned up 6MB of temp files - it asked for a reboot at the end.
I went onto the internet to update MBAM - it went from 16/09/10 to 23/09/10.
MBAM found nothing (log below).
I didn't have to "Show Results" the log came up when MBAM finished.
I disconnected from the Internet again.
I ran HiJack This (log also below).

The computer seems to be running fine.
The only difference I can report is that Windows Explorer has stopped asking for Internet Access
which I assume was fixed by ComboFix restoring the right explorer.exe file.
