Hello all,

I'm a first time poster having problems for the first time with my laptop. The problems started approx. 2 weeks ago with google searches getting redirected to random sites and also other search engines (Ask.com being one). One of the sites I am getting redirected to is hxxp://freesearchquick.com/search.php?q=redirect&sa=21&sid=71246092&p=2&s=85604&qt=1284492431&mk=1 - I tested this tonight by googling the term 'redirecting'.

I have ESET Smart Security which doesn't find any problems at all and has no problems with updating it's database. I have read various forums and tried the following programs:

Adaware which has found several Trojans - listed as Trojan-Downloader.Generic which I have quarantined.

IOBit Security 360 - This has found several Trojans -

Trojan.Generic - Quarantined, File, C:\System Volume Information\_restore{FF1F035D-E710-48AA-AD34-AB304243E08C}\RP372\A0042650.exe, 11-4611
Trojan.Generic - Quarantined, File, C:\System Volume Information\_restore{FF1F035D-E710-48AA-AD34-AB304243E08C}\RP372\A0042651.exe, 11-12473
Backdoor.Frauder - Removed, Registry Key, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\XML, 4-22656
Trojan.Generic - Quarantined, File, C:\DELL\drivers\R89495\Setup.exe, 11-4611
Trojan.Generic - Quarantined, File, C:\Program Files\CaptureWiz\Pro\Support\Vsd.exe, 11-12473

I have also downloaded Malwarebytes anti-Malware, but have been unable to run the program.

I have also had problems updating Adaware and IOBit. They both return messages that there isn't an internet connection.

Spybot - Unable to install. Message returned - 'Error Sending Request. The server name or address could not be resolved'.

I also tried to download Trend Micro Housecall but once downloaded, it came back with the message that there wasn't an internet connection.

I hope that I have given you all the information that you need to help me. And I very much appreciate any advice that you can give.

Should you need anything else, please ask. And if I can return the help in any way, I will be more than happy to do so.

Regards

Jon

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
  1. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  2. Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:
Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
    • The application window will appear
    • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
    • Click Yes to continue
    • A 'Finished!' message will appear
    • Click OK
    • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:
Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link1
    Link2
    Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.
    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
      • DDS.txt
      • Attach.txt
    • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
    • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
    • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Scan With RKUnHooker
  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.

Hi Gringo,

Thankyou for replying and offering to help.

Since my original posting, I have managed to get IOBit Security 360 updated and working, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware working and run checks with them. I'm still getting the redirecting webpages however. If I click a result from a Google search, it will redirect to something like: http://clicks.bestquickfind.com/xtr_new?q=...QepBokmwcaBj4k=

I have since followed your instructions and here are the results:

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is Known as a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit <--please read

What this virus does do.
QUOTE
Functionality
The functionality that the Trojan exhibits implies that it has been designed with profit-making as its primary objective. Making money from the Web typically involves generating Web traffic, installing pay-per-install software and also by generating sales leads for other Web sites and services of a dubious nature. It tries to achieve its objective by employing an array of techniques to try and make the user participate in these income-generating activities.

What the virus can do.
QUOTE
Backdoor.Tidserv is a Trojan horse that uses an advanced rootkit to hide itself. It also displays advertisements, redirects user search results, and opens a back door on the compromised computer.

This "could" allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Hi Gringo,

I'm so sorry for the late response. I've had to come away with work and left my laptop transformer at home. I've just got a replacement today and have just re-connected to the net.

I just wanted to let you know that I'm still having problems and will reply in detail after I have compiled the information.

Thanks again

Jon

Hi Gringo,

I'd just like to apologise again for not being able to run the tests yet. I'm still having difficulties getting to my laptop and finding internet connections.

Is it ok for me to do it all next weekend when I get back home? Are you ok to wait until then, or is it better to start another thread when I get back home?

Thanks again

Jon

Hi Gringo,

Many thanks for your patience. I am finally back home with a decent internet connection. So here is the log from ComboFix:

I have been running my virus program (ESET Smart Security), AdAware, Malwarebytes and IObit Security 360 a lot and they are finding less problems than at the start of any issues. I have not noticed any re-direction of webpages from google searches since I got back home either (although, I've only been using my laptop for a couple of hours since returning).

I hope this helps.

Thanks again

Jon

Hello

I would like you to do some reading about one of the programs you are running - IOBit

I want to rerun RKUnhooker please
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"
