While visiting a previously trusted website several days ago (September 10th), my security software (AVG and Windows Defender) started detecting threats, which I then attempted to heal by following the security software's recommended actions.
My laptop seems to be running well now, except on startup, I get the following error message:
"Error loading C:\WINDOWS\MTF196$\mmduch.dll
The specified module could not be found."

Here are the threats that were detected:
Windows Defender caught and 'succeeded' in removing Trojan:Win32/Hiloti.gen!D
Two days later, Windows Defender caught and supposedly removed this same Trojan again.

AVG at first caught two infections, then two days later caught four more. All of these infections are currently in AVG's Virus Vault. Here are the virus names and each one's associated "path to file" in the order that they were caught:

Infection - Trojan horse Generic18.VSD

PUP - Adware Generic4.AINS

Infection - Trojan horse Pakes.HAX
C:\Documents and Settings\.....\Application Data\Udacy\ycxo.exe

Infection - Trojan horse Generic19.LYJ
C:\Documents and Settings\.....\Local Settings\Application Data\kkntmgcss\lkmiijiuqiw.exe

Infection - Trojan horse Generic19.LIX
C:\Documents and Settings\.....\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\WECVJML8\svchost[1].exe

Infection - Trojan horse Pakes.HAX
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{3A579F61-82CF-4117-919A-DB7B394CD5BC}\RP3\A0000122.exe

So, here's the DDS.txt log:

============= FINISH: 13:58:37.54 ===============

A quick note regarding missing GMER log:
I tried running GMER 3 times, and each time my computer ended up freezing.
1st attempt: after starting the scan, I returned to BleepingComputer to continue reading next steps in the preparation guide. A few minutes later, I checked on GMER scan progress, and realized that my computer was frozen.
2nd attempt: after leaving GMER scan to run for 4~5 hours, it appeared the scan was complete. No 'finished' message, but the activity going on at bottom of GMER window had stopped, so I tried to save log file. Computer froze.
3rd attempt: let GMER run for approximately 9 hours. The activity at the bottom of window was still cycling through files, but it looked to me like it was just scanning over the same files that it had already scanned, so I stopped the scan. Should I have let it go longer? Is it supposed to take so long? I then tried saving the log that had been generated up to that point, but once again - computer froze.

Take a trip to this webpage for download links and instructions for running Combofix by sUBs.*
  • Please be aware that this tool may require the PC to be rebooted so close any programs you have open before you start.
  • When CF has finished, it will produce a log - C:\ComboFix.txt - copy and paste it into your next reply.
  • Let me know how the PC is behaving.
* There are two points to note from the instructions page:

1) The Recovery Console.

It is recommended that you install this as, in certain circumstances, it may be the difference between a successful repair and a reformat. If you are uncertain as to whether or not you already have the Recovery Console installed, simply run CF and it will prompt you if it does not detect it.
CF will complete some, but not all, of it's removal tasks without the installation of the Console so, should you choose not to allow the installation, you may not get the results you hoped for.

2) Disabling your Anti-Virus.

CF has been the victim of false-positive detections on occasion and a resident AV may incorrectly identify and delete part of the tool which won't do it much good. If you don't disable your AV, you may not get the results you hoped for either.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Thanks for the reply.
A quick update from my side:
A couple days after posting, I noticed the little yellow shield in my task bar, indicating the latest windows update was waiting to be installed. I resisted taking any action, but after a couple days of leaving it alone, the updates installed automatically. Following the installed updates, a little balloon popped up recommending that I let Windows Defender run a scan, so I did, and as it cycled through various files, AVG successfully caught and quarantined a handful of threats.
Following this, I still received the 'mmduch.dll' error message at startup, so I did a bit of research, and discovered that the way to resolve the error was to delete a malicious entry from the registry called 'bipro', which pointed to the now-quarantined 'mmduch.dll'.

Now, I don't get any error message, and my computer seems to be running just fine....
But, having owned the computer for 2+ years, I wouldn't be surprised if there were some bugs hiding in places that my anti-virus and anti-spyware programs can't detect.
I will go ahead and download ComboFix, read the instructions, and post a log from the ComboFix scan (either tomorrow evening or Friday morning) unless I hear otherwise from you.

Thanks again.

As there has been no response for five days this thread is now closed.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.
