I need some help removing the Virtumonde spyware.
I have been reseaching this and other forums for previous posts regarding this.

MS Antispyware detects the Virtumonde upon booting up. I click to remove and it reappears on next boot up.
For a few days it was reporting Trojan Downloader CR64 Loader on every boot, now it is Virtumonde.

Here's the steps I have taken today.
All programs were updated before running.

In Safe Mode, I ran the following:

AVG Antivirus- No virus found
Ad Aware SE- No critical Objects
Spybot S&D-No Threats
MS Antispyware-1 threat-Trojan.Downloader.CR64Loader-Removed
Norton FixVundo Tool-Vundo not found
Norton FxVMonde-Virtumonde not found
Hijack This-Scan

I then rebooted and MS Antispyware reported Virtumonde trying to install. I removed it and decided to come here for help.
Here is my HJT log from when I last scanned in safe mode.
Pardon the length, I use a HOSTS file.

I also noticed from the log from MS ANtispyware that the registry key where the threats have been detected over the past few days, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Code Store Database\Distribution Units\{288C5F13-7E52-4ADA-A32E-F5BF9D125F98, is still present on my computer. Would deleting this from the registry help?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
John

  • Please download hoster from the link below.
    http://www.funkytoad.com/download/hoster.zip
  • Unzip Hoster.zip
  • Open Hoster.exe
  • Then click on "Restore Original Hosts"
  • Close program when complete.
  • Empty Recycle Bin
  • Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread, after completing any other instructions given
Please download ewido security suite it is a free version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck.
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful") Posted Image
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Close ewido security suite.

Post a new HJT log and the ewido log at the end!

OK Here we go.
First off, thanks for the help.

I ran The Hoster and when I tried to restart the computer, I missed getting into Safe Mode(Keyboard Failure) so it booted normally and MS Antispyware did NOT alert me that Vitrumonde/Downloader was trying to install, so was the problem in the Hosts file?
The computer has booted with no warnings ever since.
I booted into safe mode this morning and ran the utilities and here are the logs.

With IE closed, run Hijack This again.
Put a checkmark on these entries and hit "fix checked":

I see you have 2 anti-virus programs running at the same time! That's a pretty bad idea! It will cause big slowdowns!
I recommend you get rid of one of them (norton or AVG)

Reboot and post a new log
