Hi there,
I've been battling with my trojan infection for a couple of days now, but I can't seem to get rid of a couple of things that seem to keep reinfecting my system. I also still get popups every couple of minutes, mostly in Firefox.

Right now, I'm running Kaspersky AV with active scan. I also have AVG but it's not set to actively scan. I used to use Norton AV but I uninstalled it because my updates ran out (but I still use systemworks).

Upon reboot, something is also temporarily disabling my firewall. Ewido still keeps finding Look2Me, and I get a rundll error upon reboot.

Here's my Hijack This log. Please help, as this is driving me batty! Thanks!

Please download WebRoot SpySweeper from HERE (It's a 2 week trial):
  • Click the Free Trial link under to "SpySweeper" to download the program.
  • Install it.
  • Once the program is installed, it will open.
  • It will prompt you to update to the latest definitions, click Yes.
  • Once the definitions are installed, click Sweep Now on the left side.
  • Click the Start button.
  • When it's done scanning, click the Next button.
  • Make sure everything has a check next to it, then click the Next button.
  • It will remove all of the items found.
  • Click Session Log in the upper right corner, copy everything in that window.
  • Click the Summary tab and click Finish.
  • Paste the contents of the session log you copied into your next reply.
And then post a new HJT log
David

Hi David, thanks for your prompt reply!

Odd that this one program would seem to fix the problem, when so many others didn't. I'm not exactly sure if it's all gone, but here's the latest HJT log:

Hmmm, i just ran an Ewido scan again and it detected a Look2me dll in system32 again... it got rid of it, but now I'm wondering where it came from, since my popups seem to have disappeared. Is it some hidden trojan downloader still?? Anyway, I am running TrendMicro Housecall now to see.

During this time, AVG caught a couple of other random trojan alerts, but on a couple of older files that at one point were just fine (like a via chipset miniport exe... miniport_533.exe).

What's going on here?
thanks

If you have already got ewido sktip the downloading but please complete a scan and save the log:

Please download ewido security suite it is a free version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck.
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful") Posted Image
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Close ewido security suite.

Post a new HJT log and the ewido log at the end!

Please do both of the following before we start if possible!:

1) Please print off these intructions - they will be needed later when internet access is not available.
2) Save these instructions in word/notepad to the desktop where they can be easily found for the same reasons as above.
At the moment you may feel like you battling with your computer to keep it running smoothly, but doing the following things should most certainly help getting it back to how it was
_____________________

Click Start > Run > and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find

xshwmiqvsvqkv

Rightclick and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK. File-Exit the Services utility.

Note: You may get an error here when trying to access the properties of the service. If you do get an error, just select the service and look there in the top left of the main service window and click "Stop" to stop the service. If that gives an error or it is already stopped, just skip this step and proceed with the rest.

Hi there David,

Ok, here's my latest HJT log. I followed the instructions, however I manually erased the xshwmiqv.exe file some time ago in my earlier attempts to clean my computer (before I posted to this forum). Naturally, Killbox says the file doesn't exist. However, the entry in services.msc was still there but it already said 'stopped'. I disabled it anyway.

Clean Log!! Posted Image
How's everything running?

Hello David and Happy Holidays!
Thanks a lot for helping out with the problem; it was really driving me insane! The computer runs without a hitch now. However, I do have a couple more questions:

1. In the services.msc window, I still see an entry for xshwmiqvsvqkv but it's disabled (and the file has been deleted). How do I get rid of this entry in services.msc? I know it doesn't mean anything, but the existence of the entry still makes me nervous.

2. What does this entry in the HJT log mean? C:\WINDOWS\SG93YXJkIFZ1\command.exe (file missing)
I know the file has been deleted, but this is still in the log. How do I get rid of it?

Thanks for everything. Otherwise, everything seems back to normal.
-H.

As far as i know the entry in services.msc stays there....

In the most recent HijackThis log that entry had gone - would you like to post a new HJT log if it's come back

You will need to do the system restore part also:

The log is clean! :flowers:

Now turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore. In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

If i have helped you please consider making a donation using the "make a donation" button in my signature. My help is free, but please consider it to keep me fighting spyware for you and others! :trumpet: :inlove:

David

No, I don't think it's necessary to post another log... the cmdService file had been deleted already. It was just still existing as a disabled entry in services.msc.

However, I was able to look up how to delete those entries services.msc in the registry, so everything is fine!
Machine runs great.
Thanks again for your help!
