After having restored my computer back to factory conditions, the virus is still there and I need to know what I can do to finally get rid of it. After reading a description on different types of viruses out there (multipartite, stealth, polymorphic, program) I feel the virus I have is all of these!

In July my computer became very infected with this nasty virus and it did the following things:

-regular pop ups
-fake antivirus software (multiple ones) that would try to stop me from running avg
-webpages would completely and randomly not load
-webpages very frequently redirected
-mouse cursor would jump around while typing emails
-inhibit downloading of malwarebytes, avg and gmer

After slowing the virus down with programs like rkill and malwarebytes (which I had to rename to be able to download), and trying to find the suspicious files on my own and deleting them, my computer became manageable again. But after about a week, the virus, which wasn't completely deleted returned in full force, so I decided it was time to do a full system restore back to my computer's factory settings.

Even after the full restore, I still felt like the virus wasn't completely gone. Every once and a while like 2-3 times a week and randomly Google mostly would randomly redirect me when I attempted to click on a link. As the redirecting didn't happen very often, I kept using my computer thinking it was only a small inconvenience.

At that point I did full avg and malwarebytes scans thinking they would get the last remnants of the virus and they both turned up nothing.

In the following weeks the virus started getting a little more annoying with more frequent redirects, often times basic webpages like facebook not loading, and cursor jumping so I decided to do avg and malwarebytes scans in safe mode. The malwarebytes scan turned back nothing but the avg scan, as soon as it started looking in the boot drives, my computer would completely crash and shut off. I tried the scan another 3 times to the same result. It only crashes in safe mode.

An IT specialist at my work recommended using combofix saying that whatever was still on my computer, it would find, and I think combofix found a few registry things and repaired them, but my computer is still having the same problems and it is getting gradually worse.

I would be attaching the Ark.txt file from Gmer, but my computer crashes when I try to run that program. It crashes before I am able to uncheck the boxes that you say need to be unchecked in the instructions.

There are all sorts of suspicious programs running as well like some msn toolbar and my computer won't give me access to delete the folder it is in.

I am so sick of this virus and I really want it to finally be gone.

Thank you so much for any help you can provide me!

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
  1. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  2. Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:
Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
    • The application window will appear
    • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
    • Click Yes to continue
    • A 'Finished!' message will appear
    • Click OK
    • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:
Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link1
    Link2
    Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.
    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
      • DDS.txt
      • Attach.txt
    • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
    • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
    • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Scan With RKUnHooker
  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth,. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

information and logs:
In your next post I need the following
      1.logs from DDS
      2.log from RKUnHooker
3.let me know of any problems you may have had

Gringo

Hello

there is the problem, it is the router not the computer

Resetting Router

Let’s try to reset the router to its default configuration.
  • This can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into a small hole labeled "reset" located on the back of the router.
  • Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds).
  • If you don’t know the router's default password, you can look it up. Here
  • You also need to reconfigure any security settings you had in place prior to the reset.
  • You may also need to consult with your Internet service provider to find out which DNS servers your network should be using or you can use OpenDNS

Note: After resetting your router, it is important to set a non-default password, and if possible, username, on the router. This will assist in eliminating the possibility of the router being hijacked again.

Hi Gringo,

That makes complete sense because the other person who uses this router has been having problems with their computer as well.

In a couple days I will be moving and no longer using this router.

Do I have to worry about the virus from the router still effecting my computer once I change routers?

Well its not my router so I wish I could.

I have forwarded them your recommendations which I completely believe is the problem 100%.

They only trust their IT specialist at their work who just thinks that they might have downloaded a virus.

He apparently deleted some programs from their computer.

I am thinking about reseting the router when they are asleep and changing the password so they don't have to be bothered with it.

I will PM you when I have moved and I am using a more secure router...so next week if that is ok?
