Can anyone give me an idea on how much hard disk space is needed to prepare/burn a dvd that will be about 2 hours long?

When I try to prepare the dvd footage prior to burning I get an error message 'there is not enough space in the temporary files folder for preparing the dvd'.

I know I am low on space on my pc but I have two spare external hard drives one with 170gb free space and the other with 230gb of free space. I would have thought both of these would have been enough.

Your Temp File folder is located on C: drive, so the amount of free space left on that drive, would determine the amount of free space left in your Temp File.
In your DVD authoring program, do you have the option to set, where it places temp files.
If so, direct it to one of your external drives.

Have you cleaned out your Temp folder lately?
Start / run / %temp% / OK
