Hi all,

First time post for me, hope it could have been good news.... but like most people I am posting because I am in desperate need of help. Starting 2 days ago, my work laptop has been acting weird. It all started when my laptop shut down on its own one evening because of lack of power (I know this because of the event log which displays a message saying so). On the next reboot, I got a windows error popup message indicating "Generic Host Process...." and also some recurring popups indicating the Spooler service failed / crashed. It is only when I noticed that Google searches were being redirected sometimes to Looksmart and other random search sites that I knew I was in trouble and probably victim of a malware.

Thing to note that may be of interest, I usually put my comp to sleep, and never shutdown. I probably had not shutdown for a few weeks / months and therefore I believe that the forced shutdown caused a sleeping malware to wake up cuz I had not downloaded or installed anything in those 3 days when the problem occured.

Problem Symptoms:

- The first symptom I saw was an error popup on Windows startup indicating "Generic Host Process.....".
- The next thing I noticed was error popups happening at a regular interval indicating that my Print Spooler service was crashing and I could not access my printer.
- The next thing I noticed was that when clicking on Google search results, they sometimes redirected to other sites; most of the time to Looksmart. Sometimes the links stalled on a Google link and other times I get the HTTP error page.

What I have tried:

- First thing I did was take a look at my Windows Event Logs.
- Noticed a windows event log stating that I was running out of power and my computer shutdown.
- Noticed a windows event log on following bootup from FTDISK stating that "the system could not successfully load the crash dump driver".
- I was running Avira Antivir on my computer at the time the problem started to occur. I have since uninstalled it and installed Avast instead since I use that one at home and thought it woul have better success at helping me get rid of the problem.
- I installed and ran the Malwarebytes tool. (By the way, had to rename the .exe since it would not run with default name.) The tool found registry entries in TCP/IP consistent with Trojan-DNSCHANGER; seems it found rogue DNS entries. I clicked the "REMOVE" button to have those fixed. (I will post the Malwarebytes logs in a few minutes).
- Noticed on next reboot that the problems were still there.
- I ran the AVAST boot-time scan; it found Trojan-Gen in three files; all files that I had not used in over a year. I deleted / moved to chest on all of them.
- Noticed on next reboot that the problems were still there.
- As suggested on the NET, I disabled the "Dump File" mechanism of WinXP in order to stop the FTDISK error from occuring.

So this is where I am at now; I am currently following the instructions set by BleepingComputer concerning preparation for support. I will be posting the logs soon. Hope someone will be able to help me.

Cheers

Looks like GMER is stuck on the following entry:

SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\cqw32.exe

Last line I can see in the log window is:

Device \FileSystem\Fastfat \Fat B6DA2D20

My comp is slowed to a halt, and I was in SAFE MODE on top of it..... will try to reboot windows and see if I can get that log.

After a reboot in SAFE MODE, I get a popup window on the login screen stating:

"The instruction at 0x001a61bb referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be written"

I will edit this post as I progress .... easier to keep track of what's happening.

Hi Gringo, thanks for helping me out.

I managed to get GMER running ok in WinXP SAFE MODE by not clicking OK on the svchost.exe Application Error popup and leaving it open ..... should I let it finish before I get the logs you requested?

Ok, I restarted Windows in Normal mode and then did what was requested.

I got 2 error popups upon logging into windows, I left those popups untouched to avoid a system freeze:

szAppName : svchost.exe szAppVer : 5.1.2600.5512 szModName : unknown

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is Known as a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit <--please read

What this virus does do.
QUOTE
Functionality
The functionality that the Trojan exhibits implies that it has been designed with profit-making as its primary objective. Making money from the Web typically involves generating Web traffic, installing pay-per-install software and also by generating sales leads for other Web sites and services of a dubious nature. It tries to achieve its objective by employing an array of techniques to try and make the user participate in these income-generating activities.

What the virus can do.
QUOTE
Backdoor.Tidserv is a Trojan horse that uses an advanced rootkit to hide itself. It also displays advertisements, redirects user search results, and opens a back door on the compromised computer.

This "could" allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Alright,

I tried to run Combofix, had to rename it to cmbfix to even have it start, only saw the progress bar for a second and then it apparently went ahead and closed the two error popup windows I had open. After that, everything is frozen up and Combofix does not seem to be running, I dont see any windows open.

Any suggestions ?

Also, from what you know of this Rootkit, could it have been active before I started to see the symptoms recently a few days ago?

Hello

could it have been active before I started to see the symptoms recently a few days ago?
no, the main job of this virus is to cause redirects

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.

Things seem to be going much better now, FYI. Anything else I should do to clean things up?

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs
    1. click on start
    2. then go to settings
    3. after that you need control panel
    4. look for the icon add/remove programs
    click on the following programs

    Adobe Reader 7.0.9
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    Java™ 6 Update 2
    Java™ 6 Update 3
    Java™ 6 Update 5

    and click on remove

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.
If you don't like Adobe Reader (33.5 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(3.5MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Greetings

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):
