Hi. I was wondering if you could help me out. Almost everytime that I run a search on google or yahoo if I click on a link it redirects me to another website. I've run numerous malware scans without them showing anything. I ran TDSSKiller and it shows that it finds Rootkit.win32.tdss.tdl4 everytime I run it (even after I request that it cure the file). I've run combofix a few times in the past (during the search it always says that "combofix has detected the presence of rootkit activity and needs to reboot the machine") and the problem seems to disappear and then comes back when the computer reboots. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Here is the most recent log from combofix and rootkit unhooker (after I ran combofix)

Hello, and welcome.gif to the Malware Removal forum! My online alias is Blade Zephon, or Blade for short, and I will be assisting you with your malware issues!

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

Before we begin cleaning your machine, I'd like to lay out some guidelines for us to follow while we are working together.
  • I will be assisting you with your malware issues. This may or may not resolve other problems you are having with your computer. If you are still having problems after your machine has been determined clean, I will be glad to direct you to the proper forum for assistance.
  • Even if things appear better, that does not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions until I give you the all clean. Absence of symptoms does not mean that all the malware has been removed. If a piece of the infection is left, it can regenerate and reinfect your machine.
  • Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • I ask that you please refrain from running tools other than those I suggest to you while I am cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so I know what is going on with the machine at any time. If you act independently it will cause changes to your system that I will not be aware of, which will make the process of cleaning the machine a much slower and more difficult process. Additionally, some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.
  • Please perform all steps in the order received. If you are unsure or confused about any instructions I give you, you should ask me to clarify before doing anything. Additionally, if you run into any problems while carrying out instructions, you should STOP and reply back here explaining what happened.
  • After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed. If you need additional time, that is perfectly alright; you just need to let us know beforehand. smile.gif

Hi CPGirl.

Sorry for the delay.

Let's try this.

Download Bootkit remover to your desktop
This is a rar file if you do not have a program to open it then download and install Peazip

Extract Remover.exe to your desktop
Double click on Remover.exe
It will show a Black screen with some data on it
Right click on the screen and select Mark
Then take your mouse and select the info in the black screen then hit the enter key to copy it to the clipboard.
Open a notepad and press Control+V to paste in the contents.

Post the resultant log here please.

~Blade

Hello.

Your log indicates you have an infected Master Boot Record (MBR). To learn more about this infection please refer to:Rerun MBRCheck.exe again by double-clicking on it. Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Wait until you see the following line: Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
  • Enter 'Y' and then press Enter.
  • When asked: 'Enter your choice:', select option [2] (Restore the MBR of a physical disk with a standard boot code) and press the Enter key.
  • Now the program will ask: 'Enter the physical disk number to fix (0-99, -1 to cancel)'
  • Enter [0] (for PhysicalDrive0) and press the Enter key.
  • The program will show Available MBR codes followed by a list of operating systems as shown below.
    QUOTE
    Available MBR codes:
    [ 0] Default (Windows XP)
    [ 1] Windows XP
    [ 2] Windows Server 2003
    [ 3] Windows Vista
    [ 4] Windows 2008
    [ 5] Windows 7
    [-1] Cancel
Please select the MBR code to write to this drive:
  • Please select your version of Windows from the list and enter the corresponding number (For example, type 0 or 1 for XP, type 3 for Vista, type 5 for Windows 7, etc) and then press Enter. Be careful...if the wrong OS is used, it will render the computer unbootable.
  • When prompted for confirmation: 'Do you want to fix the MBR code?'. Type the full word Yes (not Y or the fix will not work) and press Enter.
  • Left-click on the title bar (where program name and path is written).
  • From the menu chose Edit -> Select All.
  • Press the Enter key on your keyboard to copy selected text.
  • Open Notepad, paste that text into it and save to your desktop as MBRCheck.txt.
  • When complete, you should see Done! Press ENTER to exit.... Press Enter on the keyboard.
  • Reboot your computer to complete the fix and copy/paste MBRCheck.txt in your next reply.
  • If your computer does not restart on its own, please restart it manually.
Important Note: While fixing the Master Boot Record (MBR) is generally safe, there is a small risk of damaging the operating system so that it will not boot up or the partitions may become corrupted. Further, Vista does not always use the same MBR code as it depends on the type of install that was used. I recommend you have your Windows CD available which will allow recovering the boot code via the Windows Recovery Console (XP) or Recovery Environment Startup Repair (Vista, Windows 7) in case of any problems, or install the XP Recovery Console before proceeding with the above fix. Then if any problems occur, the links below explain how to use and repair the MBR:

Please open a Notepad file: (From the Start Menu, click Run and type notepad in the window that appears.)
  • Copy the contents of the below code box into the notepad window.
  • Save the file as fixit.bat on your desktop: (Important! make sure you change the "Save As Type" to "All Files")
    CODE
    @Echo off
    remover.exe fix \\.\PhysicalDrive0
  • Close the notepad window and click on the fixit.bat file on your Desktop (a window will open and close quickly. This is normal)

Please reboot the machine, then double click on remover.exe to create a new bootkit remover log. Post the log here.

Hi CPGirl.

Unfortunately, our fix isn't sticking. We need to try something else. What we're about to try is somewhat risky, but will offer us the best chance for success. Due to the inherent risk involved, please take heed of the following.

Before we continue: Please be aware that removing Malware is a hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose before we continue.

2 guidelines when backing up:

1) Backup all your important data files, pictures, music, work etc... and save it onto an external hard-drive. These files usually include .doc, .txt, .mp3, .jpg etc...
2) Do NOT backup any applications/installers and Do NOT backup any files with the following extensions
  • .exe
  • .scr
  • .htm
  • .html
  • .xml
  • .zip
  • .rar

This because these files may be infected as well. If you back them up and replace them afterwards, it will infect your computer again.

**Important note to some Dell users - fixing the mbr may prevent access the the Dell Restore Utility, which allows you to press a key on startup and revert your computer to a factory delivered state. There are a couple of known fixes for said condition, though the methods are somewhat advanced. If you are unwilling to take such a risk, you should not proceed, and you will either need to restore your computer to a factory state or allow your computer to remain having an infected mbr (the latter not recommended).
  1. Restart your computer
  2. Before Windows loads, you will be prompted to choose which Operating System to start
  3. Use the up and down arrow key to select Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
  4. You must enter which Windows installation to log onto. Type 1 and press enter.
  5. At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following bolded text, and press Enter:
      fixmbr
  6. At the next prompt type the following bolded text, and press Enter:
      exit
Windows will now begin loading.

***************************************************

Once Windows has finished loading:

Double click on Remover.exe
It will show a Black screen with some data on it
Right click on the screen and select Mark
Then take your mouse and select the info in the black screen then hit the enter key to copy it to the clipboard.
Open a notepad and press Control+V to paste in the contents.

Please post this log in your next reply.

Im trying to run the Windows Recovery Console, but it doesnt work. All I get is a black screen that says "Starting Windows Recovery Console" on the bottom and nothing beyond that happens.
