Help if you can! Away all day, came home and picked up laptop only to find it wasn't responding. Turned off and on, started to come up but "Del" screen had colored verticle lines then went to a grey screen full of dollar signs then a totally black screen in sleep mode. Strangest thing is, my daughter's laptop, in another town, did the same thing yesterday as did someone else's she knows. We're guessing virus but none of the anti-virus programs we have pick anything up. Thoughts?

It looks like video chip issue.
Is it nVidia?
Did you try to start in Safe Mode?

Starts fine in safe mode. Works for awhile then goes to black screen. When restarting dollar signs come back. Should I load new driver?

safe mode is fine. no video issues in any of the troubleshooting screens, restore, etc. I don't claim to be a computer wizard but don't know why the screen would be fine in these other modes but not in the reguar mode. thx.

It looks like your video driver is corrupted.
In Safe Mode Windows loads generic driver, that's why your screen looks normal.

Dell model please.
