Windows does not recognize optical drive

Motherboard bios set to boot from optical drive. BIOS of motherboard recognizes optical drive. Windows XP does not recognize optical drive .Computer will only boot to Windows.
How can I get optical drive to work to repair or reinstall Windows XP?

Did you change the boot options in the BIOS...making the optical drive the 1st boot device, then saving the changes in the BIOS?

System manufacturer and model?

Are you using recovery/restore disks to attempt the install?
