I've been working on this for a while, and I've given in... time to ask for help. My notebook isn't updating Windows (Vista 64 bit). I've tried many of the suggestions given on boards, but nothing is working. I ran a HijackThis, and realized there are probably tons of problems, so I decided I'd start there and post it on this board. Here it is (sorry for the length):

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.

  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

Computer symptoms: The major issue is that Windows won't update (giving error code 80004002). I've researched the code, and it seems like a generic error code that could mean all sorts of things. I've tried numerous fixes, starting services, restarting services, reloading .dll's, so much that I honestly couldn't remember them all. The computer also hesitates at times, not responding for 15-20 seconds. I've never really cleaned it out, and I got it secondhand, so I have definitely been lax in my use of it. I'm not as familiar with Vista as I was with XP, so I figured I would turn to the experts. I've run full virus scans, Malwarebytes, and Windows Defender.

please don't attach the logs, but post them in your reply. Do you connect through a router? Are you the only one to use it? If not are you the only one having problems?

This happens on all routers, no matter where my notebook is. I am not the only computer on the router, though, no matter where I'm connecting, but I am the only one that has problems updating Windows, although the lag, as I'm sure you could guess, happens to other machines periodically, but not to all machines.

Hi,

I do not believe that the problem is malware related from what I can see.

I would suggest that you repost your issues in the vista forums. However please do not post a Hijackthis log as these will get transferred to the malware forums.
