OK. I received this PC from a client for cleaning. Running WinXP Home SP3 w/ 2gb ram. Security Suite 2010 (or something like that) was on it along with a bunch of other stuff. I had to run Combofix in safe mode first, then was able to download and install MBAM. It updated the morning of 9/7 and ran. Found and cleaned a bunch of stuff, log is posted at the end of this post, then ran Avira and SAS. Avira found nothing and SAS found tracking cookies only. Since Avira found nothing, I uninstalled it and installed MSSE. It took awhile, but MSSE finally updated, but I haven't actually scanned with it yet because of this problem distracting me.

Now, the evening of 9/7, I went to run MBAM again to verify it came up clean. I clicked the Check for Updates button, the green update bar went to about 5% and the system hard booted (just like I pressed the power button or something). I tried it again as soon as it came back up, and the update bar made it to about 40% before the system rebooted.
I started playing around with different stuff and here's what I found:
1) MBAM reboots the PC every time I check for updates in normal or safe mode. It has database version 4562 right now.
2) MSSE fails to update.
3) I just noticed that Windows will not update. I open control panel, click the Windows Update link on the left, and IE opens a tab with INTERNET EXPLORER CANNOT DISPLAY THE WEBPAGE.
4) SAS updates and runs just fine, but finds nothing.

RKill....

Download and Run RKill
  • Please download RKill by Grinler from one of the 4 links below and save it to your desktop.

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3
    Link 4

  • Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double-click on Rkill on your desktop to run it. (If you are using Windows Vista, please right-click on it and select Run As Administrator)
  • A black screen will appear and then disappear. Please do not worry, that is normal. This means that the tool has been successfully executed.
  • If nothing happens or if the tool does not run, please let me know in your next reply
Do not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again. Or if rebooting is required run it again.

If you continue having problems running rkill.com, you can download iExplore.exe or eXplorer.exe, which are renamed copies of rkill.com, and try them instead.

Next run Superantisypware (SAS):

Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
  • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.
If you have a problem downloading, installing or getting SAS to run, try downloading and using the SUPERAntiSpyware Portable Scanner instead. Save the randomly named file (i.e. SAS_1710895.COM) to a usb drive or CD and transfer to the infected computer. Then double-click on it to launch and scan. The file is randomly named to help keep malware from blocking the scanner.

Rerun MBAM (MalwareBytes) like this,it needs to update:

Open MBAM in normal mode and click Update tab, select Check for Updates, when done
click Scanner tab, select Quick scan and scan (normal mode).
After scan click Remove Selected, Post new scan log and Reboot into normal mode.

Please ask any needed questions, post logs and Let us know how the PC is running now.

Did as instructed: safe mode, rkill, SAS. Had no issues other than the first Rkill link was a dead link. SAS found nothing but tracking cookies. Neither Rkill or SAS required a reboot so I went right into MBAM and clicked Check for Updates button. PC hard booted at about 10% progress on the update. Booted into normal mode and gave the obligatory "Windows has recovered from a severe error" message. I started a full MBAM scan this morning before opening this topic and it completed with nothing found (again that was with database version 4562 from yesterday). SAS log is below:

Out of curiosity, I just tried downloading and reinstalling MBAM (I did NOT uninstall it first) and at the end of installation had it update and then start. It made it about 50% thru the update and did a hardboot. Yet, SAS still updates just fine.

Hi, Ok we should dump and reinstall MBAM as it was installed in safe mode. Not really the right thing to do. We did it as you had the other issues. Looks like ComboFix cleared out some issues. How is it running now or did those earlier problems occur after running Combo?

1. Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware using Add/Remove programs in the control panel.
2. Restart your computer (very important).
3. Download and run this utility. Mbam clean
4. It will ask to restart your computer (please allow it to).
5. After the computer restarts, install the latest version from here. http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php
Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent.
Note: If using Free version, ignore the part about putting in your license key and activating.
Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration.
Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.
Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray and run a Quick Scan and post that log.

Uninstalled MBAM and rebooted. Ran MBAM clean and rebooted. Downloaded and installed MBAM. I unchecked the UPDATE option at the end of installation so that the program would start. Went to the updates tab and checked for updates. PC hard booted at 46% progress of the update.

Please click Start > Run, type inetcpl.cpl in the runbox and press enter.

Click the Connections tab and click the LAN settings option.

Verify if "Use a proxy..." is checked, if so, UNcheck it and click OK/OK to exit.

You didn't answer this...

What issues are still here the updating and MBAM?

Proxy was not checked, but neither was the Auto Detect so I checked that one.
As for problems before running Combofix, I'm not sure. I was trying to get anything at all to work with that Security Suite 2010 scareware program stuck on it. MBAM wouldn't run in normal or safe mode, so I ran Combofix in safe mode. It detected rootkit activity and rebooted into normal mode and ran. After it finished, I updated MBAM and ran a full scan. It found 234 items (log is in my original post), cleaned them and requested a reboot. I have not been able to update MBAM since the first update immediately following the Combofix scan. Again, I'm not sure if Windows was able to update or not. I just realized that the OS is XP SP3 Media Center Edition, not XP Home

The only issues that I see is Windows update (IE is unable to display the webpage for updating), MSSE update fails, and MBAM update hard boots the computer.

I'm going to uninstall MSSE and download and reinstall Avira since that is what they had originally.

I forgot to include this: I used the Eset online scanner to run a scan last night before posting this topic. It found 3 items. I would post the log of what it found if you could tell me where to access that log.

EDIT: The other thing I've noticed is a redirect to a "newsdaily7" webpage. Some times when in IE, a new IE window opens and displays a newsdaily7.com page.

Copy / paste the path, "C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt" (including the quotation marks) into the Start > Run dialog box from the Start Menu on the desktop.

Just to try and rule out an issue with IE, I installed IE tab on Firefox and tried to access windows updates that way. Still can't show the windows update webpage. When trying to navigate to the updates page, I get to a certain point and then Microsoft update web site says it has encountered a problem and can't continue giving me a error number: 0x80072eff.

(THIS IS VERY FRUSTRATING!!!) I can't figure out why MBAM updating will hard boot the PC!! ARRRGGGGHHHH!!

OK if this don't work we'll have to move this topic and get a deeper look. I suspect combfix may have removed something.
Shut off your AV and try to update and run MABM. But ONLy while you do this and only go to the update site nothing else, then turn it on.

No dice.
I use the Windows Update link in the left side of Control Panel. IE opens and says it can't display this webpage. If I click the Diagnose Connection Problem button, it takes about a minute to come back and tell me it can't find anything wrong with my internet connection.
I opened MBAM and checked for updates. It rebooted at 42%.

I'm pretty sure this thing is still infected because while waiting for your reply, I was reading up on some of my other forums and IE opened a new window but never displayed anything in it. Real Player tried opening in that window. When I went to close it, I got the popups in the middle of the screen stating I'm really infected and need an antivirus program. I had to use Task Manager to kill IE.

Do I need to go to the HJT thread? You giving up, boop? I can't blame you cause its got me stumped. I've never seen anything like it.

Yes the infection that is protected is preventing the updates. Time to get a deeper look.

Please go here....
Preparation Guide ,do steps 6 - 9.

Create a DDS log and post it in the new topic explained in step 9,which is here Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs and not in this topic, thanks.
If Gmer won't run, skip it and move on.
Let me know if that went well.

boop, it took awhile to figure this out, but I couldn't post a new topic in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs forum with the DDS log copied in or attached. I had to leave the log off the post, otherwise I'd get the same IE page as when updating windows: Ie is unable to display this webpage.
Just FYI, apparently there's some infection that doesn't want people posting to BC.com
