Hello,

Account of what happened
The malware installed on my computer when i did a google search and went to their images results and clicked on an image (not porn). As soon as i clicked on the image Java opened and my Comodo firewall (which had the firewall active but not Defense+) and winpatrol started going nuts trying to block a whole bunch of files that were being downloaded and installed (If i had been thinking fast enough i would have pulled the network plug). What i did do is copy some of the file names/path each time an alert window from winpatrol popped up and of course disallowed it. Afterward I went to some of those file locations and deleted the files manually. Unfortunately none of that helped. The Malware had clearly hijacked my browser, the very least.

I ran SAS multiple times (which found some malware and rootkits on multiple scans) and AVG scanners in normal startup mode and safe mode (which found nothing). My only worry it that their may still be some other trojans or other malware that might not be so obvious as the browser hijacking. I use outlook to correspond with clients and deal with a lot of sensitive information on this computer so i'd like to be as confident as i can that the computer has been cleaned of all malware.

In addition to the log files you have requested i have attached to this post the section of winpatrol history when the infection occurred (with a note of the files i deleted manually) in case that is helpful. I also attached the two SAS logs from scans I ran that removed the malware and rootkits and the 3rd SAS log which shows a clean computer.

My Questions:
1. Do you think that i got ALL malware off my computer?
2. Is there anything you would recommend I do further to be as confident as possible that i have a clean computer

SEPARATE BUT RELATED TOPIC

In addition to the scans that i ran mentioned above, i also ran Semanitc online scanner. It found two infected files that I've know about for a while.
D:\GemleoDocs\My Software\Incoming\Software\abobeCS keygen\adobe_cs_keygen.exe is infected with Downloader
D:\GemleoDocs\My Software\Incoming\Forex Stuff\PROGRAMS\Bull's Eye Broker\Crack\ornbebrk.exe is infected with Suspicious.MH690

These are files that i downloaded off a torrent many years ago, none of which have ever been installed or executed on this computer.

It also found this infection in a file, which i did not know about and i thought was downloaded from a legitimate site (http://www.bluetack.co.uk/) but has also been on my computer for years but never installed
D:\GemleoDocs\My Software\1. P2P\eMule\BLMInstall265.exe is infected with Spyware.ADH

I am quite sure none of these files have anything to do with my current issue, but I guess now would be a good time to get your recommendation for removing these files permanently from my computer (should i just right click and delete?).

Your help is very much appreciated. Thanks!

PLEASE NOTE
I tried to upload the ark.txt file but it failed. The error message says the file is larger then the available space. I tried uploading it first before the other files and it still failed. So i pasted it into a separate post. I hope that's ok.

I tried to copy and paste the the ark.txt file directly into a post, but again too large.
So split the file into two files and will upload each half in two different posts.
Attached to this post is the first half

I guess i'm a little confused about attachment sizes (tired to locate more information on you help section but didn't find anything)
It looks like there is a maximum file size that can be posted combined for all posts.
So I split the ark.txt file in half again and have attached the 2nd part of the ark.txt file to this post.
There is a third part (176KB in size) that it seems i am prevented from posting.
Please advise.

THANKS!

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Hi,

Sorry for the delay getting back to you.
In response to your last three questions

1. Here is a link to log you requested from ComboFix http://rapidshare.com/files/417944573/ComboFix.txt

2. I think i provided complete details regarding the problems i had in my first post.
If you need more information then that please let me know

3. Currently i am not experiencing problems, but my computer was heavily infected.
My main concern is their could be malware still on my computer that is not obvious.
I deal with a lot of confidential client data on this computer so i need to do my best
to make sure the computer is in no way compromised.

Thanks again for all your help

Hello

:P2P Warning!:

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented and malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares on to your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly, your computer may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to a file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Please read these short reports on the dangers of peer-2-peer programs and file sharing.

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

Clear your Java Cache
  • click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
        Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):
  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :
I would like you to rerun MBAM
  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Download HijackThis
  • Go Here to download HijackThis Installer
  • Save HijackThis Installer to your desktop.
  • Double-click on the HijackThis Installer icon on your desktop. (Vista and Win 7 right click and run as admin)
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log From MBAM
    2. report from Hijackthis
    3. let me know of any problems you may have had
    4. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo, thanks so much for you continued help.

I realize i have some P2P software on my computer but i have not used it in years. After we are done i plan to uninstall it from my computer. Also I have a couple of files i downloaded from these networks years ago still on my computer that I would like to remove with your help when we are done with this process. i have not installed or used these files, but I would like to make sure I remove them from my computer safely.

I followed all of your most recent instructions.

1. deleted java cache
2. ran TFC
3. ran Malwarebytes. note: after it ran and I clicked ok i never got a Show Results option. The log file opened and as you can see it found nothing. I'm guessing this is why the show results option was not offered to me.
4. ran HijackThis
