Hello,

My system was recently infected with Antimalware Doctor and I followed the instructions here to remove it. I haven't had any signs that it is still around but I would like to make sure that it (and anything else that may have come with it) is removed before using my computer to enter sensitive data. Also I would like to find out how to better secure my computer for future use. Attached and below are the requested logs. Any help you can give is much appreciated.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start

    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hello,

Thankyou for your help. As I mentioned in my last post I was recently infected with Antimalware Doctor and I followed the steps on this page to remove it. After following these steps I also ran scans with AVG and Spybot Search and Destroy. I can do not seem to have any symptoms of infection after following the instructions on the page mentioned above but I would like to ascertain that my system is clean before I use it in the handling of sensitive information. Any help you can give is much appreciated.

Cheers,
Bane88

Hi,

can you please dump the MBR, it is unknown:

  • Please download mbr.exe and save it to C:\windows <- (Important!).
  • Open NOTEPAD and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:
    CODE
    @ECHO OFF
    CD "%~DP0"
    MBR -c 0 1 backup_mbr.zip
    DEL %0

  • Save this as mbrlook.bat. Choose to "Save type as - All Files" and save it to your Desktop.
    It should look like this:
  • Double click the mbrlook.bat to run it.
  • A file named mbr.zip will be created on your desktop. Please attach that to your next reply.

Once we have the backup of the file, I'll give you the instructions to replace the MBR.

Hey,

I had a bit of trouble following your instructions as Windows would not let me save mbr.exe straight to C:\Windows from the internet; it said I require administrator access. So I tried saving it to my desktop and then cutting and pasting it to C:\Windows which it let me do. I then proceeded to create mbrlook.bat on my desktop with the code you gave me. However when I ran mbrlook.bat it didn't output a file named mbr.zip instead all that appeared was a text file called mbr.log, the contents of which I will put at the end of this post.

I tried editing the permissions for C:\Windows but found that I was unable do so using "Right Click -> Properties -> Security Tab" as all options were "greyed out" and unable to be modified. Extra information about my system that may help you is that I am running Windows 7 and Firefox is my primary web browser and that I am the only user of the computer and there is only one user account. Thanks again for you help. Below are the contents of mbr.log (it's only one line).

Cheers,
Bane88

Hi,

please place mbr.exe on your desktop, then run the following batch by right-clicking it and selecting "run as administrator":

CODE
@ECHO OFF
copy "%userprofile%\Desktop\mbr.exe" C:\windows\mbr.exe
CD "%~DP0"
MBR -c 0 1 "%userprofile%\Desktop\backup_mbr.zip"
DEL %0

Hey,

The PC is holding up just fine, as I mentioned before, I didn't have any visible symptoms of infection after I followed the steps here on Bleeping Computer but I wanted to be sure that it was clean. At the end of this post are the contents are the ESET Scan log (it's not very long). Thanks for your help.

Hi,

the logs are all looking clean. I think you have successfully removed the infection.

Before we remove the tools we used, please update your software:

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "JDK 6 Update 21 (JDK or JRE)"
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u21-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Your version of Adobe Reader is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Adobe components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Adobe Reader Version 9.3. and save it to your desktop.
  • Uncheck the "Free McAfee Security plan Plus" option or any other Toolbar you are offered
  • Click the download button at the bottom.
  • If you use Internet Explorer and do not wish to install the ActiveX element, simply click on the click here to download link on the next page.
  • Remove all older version of Adobe Reader: Go to Add/remove and uninstall all versions of Adobe Reader, Acrobat Reader and Adobe Acrobat.
If you are unsure of how to use Add or Remove Programs, the please see this tutorial:How To Remove An Installed Program From Your Computer
  • Then from your desktop double-click on Adobe Reader to install the newest version.
If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the "Adobe Setup - Welcome" window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • Once the installation is finished, open Adobe Reader and accept the warranty if prompted.
  • Click on Help and select Check for Updates.
  • A window will open and Adobe will check for Updates. If any updates are found to be available click on Download.
  • Once the update is downloaded you will get a system notification telling you so. Click on the popup to restore the window.
  • In the window that opens click Install.
  • Once the update is done click Close.
Your Adobe Reader is now up to date!
