Hi

Hope you can help. I've got a big red flashing message that sits above my wallpaper that tells me that I have a spyware infection and that I should download RazeSpyware to get rid of it. I use SpyBot usually, but it won't remove this message over my wallpaper and I can't fix it in the control panel.

My HijackThis logfile is:

Hello nrs and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. To begin, let's get the operating system updated.

Your operating system is extremely out of date. By not keeping the OS updated the computer is vulnerable to every infection on the net and in emails today and trying to repair an unpatched system is virtually impossible. For update purposes, Microsoft has even stopped supporting a system that is this far out of date. Go to the Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1.a site and install Service Pack 1a.

Once that is done, go back to the Windows Update site and install all available Critical Updates but do not install SP2 at this time. This will patch the system with the most current security fixes and plug all the known holes which are present on this system. If you are not on a broadband connection the Service Pack can be obtained from Microsoft for a nominal shipping fee.

After all of the updates have been performed download WinPFind.zip and unzip the contents to the C:\ folder.

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Locate the c:\winpfind\winpfind.exe file and double-click it to run it. Now click the Start Scan button to begin the scan.

When the scan is complete reboot normally and post the WinPFind.txt file (located in the WinPFind folder) back here along with a new HijackThis log and I will review the information when it comes in.

Cheers.

OT

Life went absolutely awful after I down loaded the Service Pack 1a. Basically, all seemed normal until I had to restart. My lap top would then only get to about 30 seconds into the start up process before it would switch itself off and start again. I had to recover the whole system. Not to worry as the flashing red wall paper is gone and luckily I don't save things to the C:/ drive so I just lost a bit of rubbish on my desktop.

I seem to be in a good place now so will re-install HijackThis and SpyBot. Do you know what I did wrong?? I would like to sort this so that it doesn't happen again, but I am a bit nervous of the Service Pack 1a.

Sorry to be a pain.

Thanks for your help.
