When searching on Google (as I exclusively use Google), I am routinely redirected to Infomash.org, and occasionally to other sites (although Infomash.org is by far the most common redirect), rather then the page for the link I click. I use MS Security Essentials and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, and thus far, neither have been able to pick up this "bug" (although other viruses and malware have been found during my recent attempts to fix this nuisance). Logs are below. Thank you in advance for any help you are able to provide.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe

    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

First, Myrti, thank you so much for your help. No worries on the delay - I am just exceedingly glad you are willing and able to help me.

Now, for the problem... my browser (I use Mozilla Firefox exclusively) is routinely redirected to such places as Infomash.org and 7search.com. My online reading has led me to believe this is caused by a rootkit (I am pretty computer savvy, but I have never dealt with rootkits before, so I am very much out of my comfort zone here)

And now the requested logs:

Hi,

can you please run a scan with Rootkit Unhooker:

Please download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your Desktop
  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE to run it
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest
  • Click OK
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report
  • Save the report to your Desktop
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Has Microsoft Essentials found the infection and tried to clean it?

Hi myrti,

When I first noticed the problem, I ran a scan with MS Security Essentials and it found several trojans and a virus or two. I noticed during this scan that my definitions were outdated and attempted a manual update, but ran into problems. I have learned from past experiences that trojans like to only infect the user account that they were initially installed on, so I logged in to a different user account, re-ran the MS Essentials updates (successfully this time) and was able to pick up a couple more trojans, but this browser redirect has persisted, and MS Security Essentials has come up clean ever since. I have not run a scan since my initial post here, and just last night, was still being redirected in Firefox when doing a search on Google.

Logs below, and thanks again.

Hi,

that is not bad news, that is good news. laugh.gif The less detected the less malware there is, hopefully. wink.gif

Please run a scan with Gooredfix (that tool should find something):

Please download GooredFix from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Ensure all Firefox windows are closed.
  • To run the tool, double-click it (XP), or right-click and select Run As Administrator (Vista).
  • When prompted to run the scan, click Yes.
  • GooredFix will check for infections, and then a log will appear. Please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredFix.txt).

Here is the log. Also, Windows Update is telling me I have new updates, including the latest malicious software removal tool - should I wait to install these updates until we have this current issue resolved?

Thanks,
Tammy

The redirects have seemed to stop, and I have also noticed that certain websites that used to give me pop-ups, no longer do so. Is my computer a happy, healthy computer again?!

Hi,

it would look that way! smile.gif I would like to run an onnline scan with Eset to check for leftovers:
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push

Hi,

please run TFC to empty your temporary folders:

Please download TFC by Old Timer and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
  • Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.

TFC (Temp File Cleaner) will clear out all temp folders for all user accounts (temp, IE temp, java, FF, Opera, Chrome, Safari), including Administrator, All Users, LocalService, NetworkService, and any other accounts in the user folder. It also cleans out the %systemroot%\temp folder and checks for .tmp files in the %systemdrive% root folder, %systemroot%, and the system32 folder (both 32bit and 64bit on 64bit OSs). It shows the amount removed for each location found (in bytes) and the total removed (in MB). Before running, it will stop Explorer and all other running apps. When finished, if a reboot is required the user must reboot to finish clearing any in-use temp files.

TFC only cleans temp folders. TFC will not clean URL history, prefetch, or cookies. Depending on how often someone cleans their temp folders, their system hardware, and how many accounts are present, it can take anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or more. TFC will completely clear all temp files where other temp file cleaners may fail. TFC requires a reboot immediately after running. Be sure to save any unsaved work before running TFC.

After that please repeat the scan with Eset and let me know if it finds anything.

regards myrti

Hi Myrti,

TFC run and 470MB of temp files were cleaned out. The re-run of ESET found nothing.

That TFC is a nifty little utility. I have struggled to find an efficient way to keep my temp files from stacking up. Would that be a safe utility to use periodically to keep my temp files cleaned out?

Thanks,

Tammy

Myrti,

Ok, Adobe Reader and Java are updated. Everything seems to be humming along well. Is there anything else I need to do?
