Hi, I've been confused as to whether I've been experiencing a virus on my computer.

Originally, I was redirected away from google occasionally - sometimes going to the proper site, sometimes giving me a redirected site.

After running a few virus scans (Hitman Pro, Housecall), I managed to stop the redirection for the computer session. However, after a reboot of the computer, the google redirect symptom sometimes suddenly occurs again.

After attempting to create virus logs, I have become convinced that I'm now infected due to my inability to run the GMER scan. The GMER scan either freezes on a file or shuts down my computer. Reading some other threads, I followed the instructions asking others to just post their other available logs into this forum.

Does this have any connection to a similar, seemingly less severe, virus I was infected with last year? Are these virus types able to infect simply by visiting webpages alone?

Here is my DDS log:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:

Hello and thank you very much for helping me.

I have applied some windows updates since the day I first posted the first log, but I will refrain to until this process is finished.

Should I also disable definition updates for my anti-virus/anti-spyware during this period too?

I still have the occasional google redirection problem (sometimes to Microsoft website) and now rare web browser (IE 8) freezes while using the internet. (whether or not this problem has relations to the virus)

Hi,

please run a scan with RootkitUnhooker next:

Please download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your Desktop
  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE to run it
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest
  • Click OK
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report
  • Save the report to your Desktop
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Hi,

do you still get redirected?

Please download MBRCheck.exe to your desktop.
  1. Double click to run it
  2. It will prompt you with some text
  3. Left click on title bar (where program name and path is written)
  4. From menu chose Edit -> Select All
  5. Now just click Enter key on keyboard to copy selected text
  6. Now paste that text here for me.

Hi,

do you go online through a router? If so please try to connect to the internet directly and let me know if the redirects stop.

Hi,

Actually, I experimented a little more with the google redirect yesterday and it seems to be gone.

I do connect through a router and not a proxy, how do I connect directly? (or is this step now unnecessary?)

Thanks.

I've now noticed that this google redirect problem seems to have been removed from this computer but appears to be surfacing on another computer in my network (that connect through the same router). Is there a possibility that the virus moved through my network?

Hi,

there is the possibility of the router being infected:

Router Reset
  • Please read this: Malware Silently Alters Wireless Router Settings

  • Consult this link to find out what is the default username and password of your router and note down them: Route Passwords

  • Then rest your router to it's factory default settings:

    QUOTE
"If your machine has been infected by one of these Zlob/DNSchanger Trojans, and your router settings have been altered, I would strongly recommend that you reset the router to its default configuration. Usually, this can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into a small hole labeled "reset" located on the back of the router. Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds)"

  • This is the difficult part.
First get to the routers server. To do that type http:\\192.168.1.1 in the address bar and click Enter. You get the log in window.
Fill in the password you have already found and you will get the configuration page.
Configure the router to allow you to connect to your ISP server. In some routers it is done by a setup wizard. But you have to fill in the log in password your ISP has initially given to you.
You can also call your ISP if you don't have your initial password.
Don't forget to change the routers default password and set a strong password. Note down the password and keep it somewhere for future reference.

I have tried out the steps.

I wasn't able to access the MDC password as that seems to be locked by my ISP.

However, I still get redirected from google search results (particularly on the other computer). Occasionally, I still get redirected on this computer too. (usually only the first search after a reboot of the computer)

I believe he infection may have spreaded to the other computer. Does this have anything to do with the redirects?

A GMER scan on this other computer generated the following results.

Hi,

you have been infected by a nasty rootkit. It is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide to clean, then please run ComboFix and post the log in your next reply:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

I take it that ComboFix is to be run on my second computer, which has been infected with the backdoor trojan?

Is my original computer considered clean and "a safe computer" for changing passwords?

I do still experience google redirects on this computer though, however.
