My laptop was infected with some virus last week and everytime I "google", and click any of the links, I get redirected to some wierd websites.

My laptop info: Windows XP-Pro, Service Pack 3.

What I did:

1) I tried to update my malware-bytes but it could not even updated malware-bytes.
2) I looked at various online forums, and then cleaned my "hosts" file (removing all the lines after localhost)
3) I tried to update my malware-bytes it does not update.
4) I downloaded "Ccleaner" and run it. It cleaned atleat 8 files.
5) Then I tried to update my malware-bytes. It did update. I ran it 3times but the problem of redirection still persists.
6) I tried to "System restore" to a point which is atleast month old. But somehow all my restore points are bad. So my machine does not restore.
7) I removed my "Microsoft Security Essentials" and installed "Avast".
8) I want to give it one more try before formatting my laptop. I did not run "Combofix" yet.

Please direct me what I should do to fix this issue.

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<==. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Please include a description of your computer issues and what you have done to resolve them.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.
