Hi. Thank you for helping. One of the family members was downloading music and there was a popup which asked if we wanted to preview the song before downloading. To preview the song we were asked to press run. As soon as we pressed run the screen crazy with many popups and then it said that the computer was infected and asked if we wanted to run antivirus. We said yes but nothing happened. It just kept popping again asking if we wanted to run our antivirus scan.

I have 3 user accounts on the computer. We were in the user account called "Mark". We now cannot use any of the applications in this user account. The other 2 user accounts are still usable. The folders in the user accounts are not the same. Many of the files are hidden, a new folder has been created called 'Mark.YOUR-8ABC512Da0 and this has happened for the other 2 user accounts on the computer.

DDS and Attach are copied and attached here but I could not get gmer to finish. I got an 'out of memory...." type error after it ran for about 3 hours.

Here are the logs and thanks again for your help.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs

    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

Thank you for contacting me. Just to let you know that while I was waiting for you to reply I did the following:
1. Ran ATF Cleaner in safe mode
2. Ran Spybot, Adware, and AVG. They picked up some stuff which I quarantined but I still can access any programs from 2 of the 3 user accounts. This is the only user account that works.

I dont know if this is relevant but in my ‘documents and settings’ I had a folder called “mum” but now there’s an additional folder called “mum.YOUR-8ABC512DA0”. My documents, program files etc have moved from mum to YOUR-8ABC512DA0. This has happened with the other users too.

I have run the OTL scan and here are the results. Thanks once again for your help.

Hi,

the issue you described with the mum-folder usually happens when the user profiles get compromised and Windows is trying to recover without you noticing.

Download and run Win32kDiag:
  1. Download Win32kDiag from any of the following locations and save it to your Desktop.
  2. Double-click Win32kDiag.exe to run Win32kDiag and let it finish.
  3. When it states "Finished! Press any key to exit...", press any key on your keyboard to close the program.
  4. Double-click on the Win32kDiag.txt file that is located on your Desktop and post the entire contents of that log as a reply to this topic.

Please also run a scan with RootkitUnhooker:

Please download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your Desktop
  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE to run it
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest
  • Click OK
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report
  • Save the report to your Desktop
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Hi,

there seems to be a leftover from a previous infection (which may have caused the problem with the user accounts):

please run win32kdiag.exe again, with the following command to fix some malware related changes.
Please make sure that a copy of win32kdiag.exe is located on your desktop.

Click on Start->Run, and copy-paste the following command (the bolded text) into the "Open" box, and click OK:

"%userprofile%\desktop\win32kdiag.exe" -f -r

When it's finished, there will be a log called Win32kDiag.txt on your desktop. Please open it with notepad and post the contents here.

regards myrti

Hi,

sorry for the confusion. I wanted you to rerun Win32kdiag, not Rootkit Unhooker. Please do this now.

Hi.
1. I have been running all the steps that you have asked me to do from the "mum" user account. The "mum" user account seems to be working okay. But I am still having trouble with the other 2 user accounts. I tried to open internet explorer and it took 7 minues before the main screen appeared and even then it did not connect. It got to the stage where it said connecting but when I looked in task manager (this is about 4 minutes after the screen came up) it said 'not responding'.

2. Also, with all the users, there are now 2 folders for each of the users in 'documents and settings'. The folders structure looks like this:
Mum
Tracing
Windows
Mum.YOUR-8'ABC512DA0
Desktop
Favourites
My Documents
Start menu
Windows

This has only happened since I got the virus. Is it okay to leave it like this?
Regards
Avalon

Hi,

it should be fine to leave it like that. As mentioned these kind of "new" profiles is something windows attempts to do autoamtically when it feels your old profile got corrupted. This does not have anything to do with the malware, even though the reason the old profile got corrupted was probably malware. The creation of the new profile was something 100% done by Windows.

Could you try to reset the Internet Explorer in the other user accounts to see fi that fixes the issue?

Hi.

We have progressed!! I can open Internet Explorer now for the other 2 users. I did reset Internet Explorer but it is behaving strangely. These are the currect symptoms....

1. The "Welcome to Internet Explorer 8" screen comes up each time although I follow the prompts and choose the settings and hit next until it finishes. But when I log out of Internet Explorer and log back on again the "Welcome to Internet Explorer 8" scrren pops up again. Clearly, the settings are not being saved.

2. Teh "Manage Add-Ons" scrren pops up each time I log into Internet Explorer. It opens on the 'Search Provider' tab and indicates that the Search Suggestions is 'Not available' but wont let you fix it.

3. Each time you log on the information bar says "Your current security settings put your computer at risk. Click here to change your security settings....". When you click on the bar it takes you to an option to "fix settings". I clicked the 'fix settings' button but dont know if anything happened because when I log back in again, the same security message pops up.

4. This error is unrelated to internet explorer. When you press "Start" in the bottom left of the screen you get a panel with the icons of the last few programs accessed. This appears on the left of the panel and on the right of the panel is the icons for "control panel" and "run" etc etc. This is happening with the "Mum" user but not happening for the other 2 users.

Thanks again for your help and let me know please what else I can try.

Rebotted in safe mode and the problems persist there too for the 2 other users. An additional problem I noticed today with the 2 users is that I noticed that the AVG icon was not appearing in the icon tray. So I added it to the tray - I even had to re-enter my licence number which is odd because AVG 8.5 is working fine on the 'mum' user account. However, when I logged off and on the AVG icon has disappeared. It looks like none of the settings are being saved.

The 'mum' user works fine in safe mode.

I have copied below the 4 other problems I posted the other day for your convenience.
