Hello,

This is my first time posting onto bleeping computer, and I've already made a boo boo.

Here's the history:

I was browsing torrentreactor, and i must have accidentally clicked one of these "russian wife" ads that abound in many sites. Anyway all of a sudden my windows firewall balloon popped up saying it was disabled. Since I'm always wary of this happening, I disconnected my net adaptor to stop whatever it was before it got hold. I then ran MBAM, and sure enough it came up with some malware. However it wasnt able to remove one folder and files, and had marked them to be removed on reboot. I rebooted and reran MBAM, but all the same keys and files were detected again, and the same folder and files couldnt be deleted. I've attached the last log I had.

I tried to manually delete the ones that could not be deleted by MBAM
(
C:\WINDOWS\system32\l0wsec (Trojan.Zbot) -> Delete on reboot.
Files Infected:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\l0wsec\l0cal.ds (Trojan.Zbot) -> Delete on reboot.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\l0wsec\us3r.ds (Trojan.Zbot) -> Delete on reboot.
)
but the folder proved impossible to remove, regardless of using the ATTRIB command or file assassin.

Now comes the boo-boo part. Someone else here had the same infection, so I tried to follow the instructions given for that person (I know, they are individual - I've now learnt my lesson!) and used combo-fix. This led to a blue screen, but luckily a restart sorted it out. There are no severe side effects, except that my virtual drive software (DAEMON lite) now gives the following error:

"This program requires at least Windows 2000 with SPTD 1.56 or higher. Kernel debugger must be deactivated."

WHile this is only a minor problem, I dont know if this windows kernel debugger thing might affect other programs...

Any help would be VERY much appreciated!!

Attach.txt and MBAM logs are attached.

My DDS log is below.

Thanks,

Jay.

EDIT: I forgot to mention - I couldnt post the gmer log as requested in the starting instructions because running that scan froze my computer, i think on igfxper32 or something like that.

Here is my DDS log:

Hello, not sure what to make of this, but I just updated MBAM, re-scanned, found 5 infections, but this time it was able to remove them. A second quickscan come up clean. Not sure wether to trust this?

I still have the problem of the kernel debugger and removing combo-fix completely from my system...

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    msconfig

  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

Hi Myrti, thanks for the reply. It's OK, I appreciate the help you guys give to everyone, it's great that you take time out to volunteer here.

I have not resolved the problem, in fact I cant seem to fix it using any of the "regular" means.
I've been infected with some kind of trojans - I've mentioned the details in my first post. Basically, each time I run MBAM, it shows a few registry keys and files and folders as being infections. I then say remove infections, and it deletes some keys but certain folders cannot be removed and are marked for deletion on startup. I restart, and rerun the scan, and all the same keys and files are back. The process repeats itself each time.

I tried to delete the files which MBAM could not manually - I went to the folder C:\Windows\System32 using teh command prompt, used the ATTRIB command to unhide the folder l0wsec and files inside, set it to non system and non readonly. I then used fileassasin to release the folder and files from any process using them, and then deleted them. After all thatI could successfully delete them, but in a few minutes they reappeared.

Thats basically the problem. I'm worried about logging into anything on this laptop now. I've refrained from reformatting because I have some apps installed for which I dont have the install discs anymore, so cleaning this up would be very much appreciated.

Thanks again for taking a look at this. The logs follow:

Hi,

ok, let's see what else is hiding on your PC.

please run a scan with rootkit unhooker next:
Please download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your Desktop
  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE to run it
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest
  • Click OK
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report
  • Save the report to your Desktop
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

I wont check back again now for another 8-10 hours (its nighttime in London so gonna get some sleep smile.gif ).

Hi,

Daemon Tools is interfering with the logs we're trying to take.

Please run defogger:

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Afterwards please rerun a scan with Rootkit Unhooker.

regards myrti

Hi, I just reran MBAM, and it found the same infections again. However I notice that this time, it could delete the files that it couldnt before. However I am in diagnostic startup so many services are disabled, which might be why it could delete the l0wsec folder. THe log is attached, I'll restart and rescan and post that log in a few minutes.

Hi Myrti, I reran the scan after restarting both in selective startup and normal startup, and it comes up clean again. Not sure what happened to change things?

One thing I noticed though, that each time I scanned, my avg antivirus popped up a message on one particular file: d3dg86.exe, which was in the system32 folder. A quick google search seems to point to this as malware - do you have any idea about it?

Hi,

it probably means that the infection is still active and both avg and mbam only see part of it.

please run ComboFix next:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Hi, I ran combofix according to instructions. I've attached the combofix.txt log. There was also a "log.txt" which was opened when combofix finished its job. Please let me know if you need that as well.

Hi,

is the content of the log.txt identical to the content of combofix.txt?

D'Oh! They are. Sorry dont know why but when I looked yesterday they seemed different... must be going mad. Ignore me, they are the same.

BTW, I'm sorry but windows updates seems to have automatically installed some updates last night, it sometimes does it without asking me if my laptop is idle for a while. Hope it doesnt throw a spanner in your investigations...
