Hey Everyone,

I originally posted in the Windows XP forum because I thought my Hard Drive had crashed. I was moved to the Am I Infected forum. I was missing my Desktop, Taskbar, and had no access to my TaskManager. Thanks to Driesiooo, we worked through that and now I have my desktop back.

In a nutshell, Driesiooo had me download Hiren's Boot CD and use it to gain control of my desktop. I tried Malwarebytes Antimalware, it failed. I used SuperAntiSpyware and removed some infections. I had to do that several times before I gained control over my desk top. I was finally able to boot into safe mode with networking.

In safe mode with networking I tried to use MBAM (which was already on my hard drive) and it failed. I uninstalled and downloaded and reinstalled MBAM and it failed again. I downloaded and installed SuperAntiSpyware ran a scan, removed infections. I restarted and it started normally.

I ran my Ad-Aware and AVG and tried to remove infections. Ad-Aware found Hostfile infections. I couldn't update AVG as "Access was denied." I ran a scan anyway and AVG found 40 Trojan Horse Injectors.GT but wouldn't remove all of them.

Then Driesiooo told me to come here and start over. To read all the details of the removal process to date and scan logs from SuperAntiSpyware, Ad-Aware, and AVG please go to:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic344624.html

Thanks in advance to everyone at BleepingComputer.com.

Here are my DDS and Gmer Scans.

I started typing this post on my laptop while waiting for the GMER scan to run on my PC. I went to check on it and there was no scan running. The window was gone. I couldn't get it to open again. I tried to check the task manager by right clicking the taskbar and it wouldn't open either. I hit Ctrl, Alt, Delete and the icons and taskbar disappeared and the dialog box I was expecting didn't open. I had to force shut down and restarted normally. I started another GMER scan. It disappeared off the screen again. Something is causing the CPU to run at 100% and I couldn't access the task manager to shut it down. I forced shut down and started in safe mode with networking and I'm going to try to run GMER from there.

OK I give up I can't give you a GMER scan. The scan window disappeared again. I can't give you a DDS scan. I was able to run the DDS program and I have the log files but I have no way of transferring it to this computer because I can not open Firefox or IE (although Firefox opened and allowed me to download the programs just minutes before) and because the USB Hub was/is infected and I don't want to transfer the infection through a flash drive from my PC to my laptop. (I will do this if you feel it is safe to do so.)

I hope between this post and the previous post I have supplied all the information and removal processes to date.

I humbly await your boundless wisdom, prodigious knowledge and precise instructions, O' Great Ones of Bleeping Computer Dot Com.

R

Hello ,
And welcome.gif to the Bleeping Computer Malware Removal Forum
. My name is Elise and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

I will be working on your malware issues, this may or may not solve other issues you may have with your machine.

Please note that whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
  • The cleaning process is not instant. Logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happen.
  • Please reply using the Add/Reply button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic.
  • The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply. Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post.
  • Unfortunately, if I do not hear back from you within 5 days, I will be forced to close your topic. If you still need help after I have closed your topic, send me or a moderator a personal message with the address of the thread or feel free to create a new one.
You may want to keep the link to this topic in your favorites. Alternatively, you can click the button at the top bar of this topic and Track this Topic, where you can choose email notifications. The topics you are tracking are shown here.
-----------------------------------------------------------

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

If you have already posted a log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Quick Scan button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTListIt.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized

Please download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your Desktop
  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE to run it
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan
  • Check Drivers, Stealth and uncheck the rest
  • Click OK
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report
  • Save the report to your Desktop
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note - you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

-------------------------------------------------------------
In the meantime please, do NOT install any new programs or update anything unless told to do so while we are fixing your problem

If you still need help, please include the following in your next reply
  • A detailed description of your problems
  • A new OTL log (don't forget extra.txt)
  • RKU log

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

regards, Elise

Hi Elise,

My name is Randy. I want to thank you in advance for your help. I had originally posted on Sept. 2nd with the title No Desktop In Regular or Safe Mode. No Task Manager. No System Restore. Everything is explained in that post that had been done thru Sept. 5th. That post has been moved by Orange Blossom and I no longer have access to it. But she said that you have access. I have not started this computer since the posting above so all information should be current. (I used my laptop to check for your answer each day.)

When I started RootkitUnhookerLE I got the message about the internal parasite but Ignore wasn't an option. Either OK or Cancel. I chose OK. The message came up a second time and I chose OK again. Only then did it load. Then I ran it.

When I tried to close RootkitUnhookerLE it asked me if I was sure I wanted to close. I wasn't so I didn't. It's still open.

Here are the logs in this order:

OTListIt.txt

Hello again,

COMBOFIX
---------------
Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, or if you are running Vista, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

regards, Elise

Elise,

I used the taskbar to exit AdAware. To shut down AVG I went to MSCONFIG and unchecked the AVG and AdAware services. I did not restart. I used the task manager to end the AVG processes.

I started Combofix and it said AVG was still running.

I opened Firefox and disabled the AVG add-ons. And I rebooted the PC.
After Windows loads I got the message: Instruction at 0x59a8e432 referenced memory at 0x59a8e432. Memory could not be read. I clicked OK to terminate.

I started Combofix again and it said AVG was still running. (I forgot to uncheck the AVG start up process in MSCONFIG.)

I unchecked the AVG start up. I opened task manager and ended the processes for AVG.

I clicked OK for Combofix to run. It said AVG was still running.

I opened the Administrative Tools and under Services I saw that AVG was disabled. Not knowing where else to shut down AVG I clicked OK and ran Combofix.

After 15 to 20 minutes I checked on Combo fix and saw that it had checked 50 levels. Then it deleted a bunch of files. Most were for my Microtek Scanner. It deleted a couple of folders. (Both for the scanner.) Combofix said it was going to restart my computer. It restarted and after the OS menu it screen went black. No Desktop Background Image, No Icons, No Taskbar. The mouse pointer is visible and moves but no right click function.

Back to square one. This is what I had originally posted about.

What did I do wrong? What do I do next?

Elise,

I knew I wouldn't hear from you again yesterday and since I had no antivirus running I didn't want leave my PC running. I restarted it normally and it didn't change. (no desktop, taskbar etc.) I restarted in safe mode and it opened to the desktop. I shut it down.

Hi, can you look in safe mode for c:\log.txt (which should be created by combofix) and post it?

If nothing is there, please rerun combofix from safe mode and ignore any warnings about AVG.

regards, Elise

Hi, please let me know how things are running after the following fix.

CF-SCRIPT
-------------
We need to execute a CF-script.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click Start > Run and in the box that opens type notepad and press enter. Copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:
CODE
DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:6522

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\drivers32]
"midi9"=-

File::
c:\docume~1\HP_ADM~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\utn.tmp

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

regards, Elise

Hi,

I think I should mention that after today's first Combofix run it restarted itself into safe mode. So the second Combofix was run in safe mode also and it restarted itself into safe mode again. Should the second Combofix have been run from a Normal start up? Do you want me to restart normally to see how it's running?

R

It started normally just fine. I went to MSCONFIG and reenabled AVG and AdAware. Rebooted. It started just fine. I'm not sure what to do to test it but it seems fine.

At this point I should tell you that at the beginning of this process I did a backup as instructed. I keep all my important files on an external drive so I did a backup of the entire C Drive to a separate partition on the external drive. I then read one of BP's articles that mentioned that in doing a backup it would also transfer the infections. So using my laptop I ran an AVG scan of the C Drive backup. In the USERDATA folder it found numerous infections. All of them Keygens from stuff that I had deleted years ago. More importantly it found infections at: C:\Windows\Temp\Ivawlhoq.exe (Trojan Horse Generic 18.BRNG) and C:\Windows\system32\drivers\dmio.sys (Virus Identified Win32/Patched.DX) I do not remember seeing these files in any scans that have been done so far.

*Side Note - On this PC access is denied into the USERDATA folder but I wasn't denied access to the backup. I was able to retrieve files that I thought I had lost forever. The USERDATA folder on this PC is 46Gb. How can I get rid of stuff in that folder that is no longer needed? What can't I get rid of? 46Gb is a lot of space I could use. Should I put this in another post after we are done?

Do we have more tests to run to see if this PC is truly clean?

Hello again,

Can you pinpoint which folders are taking so much place in the Userdata folder? Which account is it?

UPDATE JAVA
------------------
Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "JDK 6 Update 21 (JDK or JRE)".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u21-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
-- Starting with Java 6u10, the uninstaller incorporated in each new release uses Enhanced Auto update to automatically remove the previous version when updating to a later update release. It will not remove older versions, so they will need to be removed manually.
-- Java is updated frequently. If you want to be automatically notified of future updates, just turn on the Java Automatic Update feature and you will not have to remember to update when Java releases a new version.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

MALWAREBYTES ANTIMALWARE
-------------------------------------------
Please launch MBAM and update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

regards, Elise

MBAM is running as I type. (Using my laptop.)

The C:\USERDATA folder is the one in question. It shows it is empty and access is denied but that's where I found all those files in the C Drive backup. ("Show hidden files and folders" is checked. "Hide operating system files" is unchecked.) C:|Properties shows 90.9Gb. If I open C: and select all then properties I get 51.7Gb. 39.2Gb difference. I did a search and I had 3 Userdata folders. One Userdata folder in HP Administrator with 32Kb. A second USERDATA folder in IE. And C:\USERDATA. No scan, of any kind, has ever found any of those Keygens that are in there. (Stuff I had deleted over 3 years ago.) It's odd that it shows empty, no scans find anything, and I have a 39Gb difference in the properties values, yet it IS there. (Like an idiot once I retrieved the files I thought had been lost I deleted the entire backup.)

When I started this cleanup process one of the scans showed that the USB was infected. Did I possibly infect my laptop by connecting my external drive to it? I do not know if the USB infection was the contracted at the same time as this current infection but the external drive was connected to the PC when I got the infection that we are cleaning. I also had 2 USB flash drives connected when I contracted this infection. How do I check and clean my external drive and my flash drives of any infections that might have transferred so I don't reinfect my PC?

I disabled the autorun feature on my laptop after I read an article about USB infections. And I will disable the autorun feature on te PC when we are done.

This is odd. While it was scanning it found one of the Keygens in C:\USERDATA. I had to send it to the Vault for it to continue. But it isn't in the vault nor did it record it in the log. It didn't find the other 6 or 7 Keygens either.
