Ok, I know what it is and i'm sure you folks have had some fun with this one. I have tried various things and thought I had nipped it in the bud, but i'm still getting random webpages to odd sites opening every now and then. All assistance greatly appreciated in slaying this annoying doctor for good! Thanks.

By the way, i'm new to this lark - not megadumb or lazy - so please give me a little leeway. As I type my pc has recently slowed to absolute zero and I have had to reboot.

Here are my dds and gmer logs:

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
  1. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  2. Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:

Thank you for coming to my assistance Gringo. Here is my update. I managed to get rid of most of it, as I said in my first post. However, the annoying advertising webpages kept popping up from nowhere so it obviously wasn't all gone. Then, I came here looking for assistance, bizarrely, my pc slowed to a complete freeze when I was going about collecting the logs in my first post. I don't know if someone was hacking me, but that was really weird. Since then, the webpage ads kept popping up for a few days. Just a couple of days ago the whole anti-malware doctor package came back to life from nowhere. Namely, appearing in my program files, desktop, start menu, quick launch bar and notification area. There was also the internet explorer window showing it scanning reappearing. Oh well, I hope I can be rid of this. Here are my latest logs as requested:

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is Known as a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit <--please read

What this virus does do.
QUOTE
Functionality
The functionality that the Trojan exhibits implies that it has been designed with profit-making as its primary objective. Making money from the Web typically involves generating Web traffic, installing pay-per-install software and also by generating sales leads for other Web sites and services of a dubious nature. It tries to achieve its objective by employing an array of techniques to try and make the user participate in these income-generating activities.

What the virus can do.
QUOTE
Backdoor.Tidserv is a Trojan horse that uses an advanced rootkit to hide itself. It also displays advertisements, redirects user search results, and opens a back door on the compromised computer.

This "could" allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

:multiple Anti Virus programs:
It looks like you are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:

    AV: AVG Anti-Virus Free
    AV: AntiVir Desktop

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

    Please remove one of them.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Hello Gringo. Well, I followed all the instructions and everything seems fine for now. Too early to say for sure I guess. One thing I did notice was that when my pc rebooted after the Combofix scan nothing loaded in my notification area. Well, apart from a balloon telling me my pc might not be protected and the yellow windows update shield telling me to update my pc. I usually have 9 things load up in my notification area (clock included). I clicked on the windows shield and it told me 1 update was ready. Something didn't seem right and I had a nagging thought in my head that maybe I had got the anti-malware doctor from a fake windows update in the first place. I went directly to the Windows update site and it told me there were 12 express updates available. My pc was set to automatically download and install updates every day by the way. Maybe this wasn't happening? I downloaded them and rebooted my pc again. Everything loaded up fine the second time without another windows update shield. Maybe I am speculating about nothing, but I thought I would mention all this. No harm done. thumbup2.gif

A couple of other things I will add. Firstly, my avira spyware program was disabled already. Was it showing as it active to you then, as you asked me to disable it? Secondly, unless i'm mistaken, disabling the AVG resident shield should be all that's needed to run Combofix safely. I disabled the resident shield and Combofix was still not recognising that it was disabled. If this is a regular error it might stump some people. I'm just trying to be helpful with some feedback here. Here is the Combofix log:

Hello

AV: AntiVir Desktop *On-access scanning disabled* (Updated)
AV: AVG Anti-Virus Free *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated)

These are both antivirus programs and should not be run together you need to remove one of them

:P2P Warning!:

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented and malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares on to your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly, your computer may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to a file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Please read these short reports on the dangers of peer-2-peer programs and file sharing.

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

    1. click on start
    2. then go to settings
    3. after that you need control panel
    4. look for the icon add/remove programs

    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.

  • Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log From MBAM
    2. report from Hijackthis
    3. let me know of any problems you may have had
    4. How is the computer doing now?

Hello Gringo. I was always told by others that it was having the resident protection switched on in more than one anti-virus and/or anti-spyware program was what caused system conflicts. Being told by others doesn't mean they are right I know, but unless you think this is causing me a serious problem I will leave the Avira on there. I really haven't noticed any system issues at all since installing it a long while back. If you are adamant that I should remove it, then I while do so.

Thank you for the P2P advice. A few years back I was told that P2P was reasonably safe. 'Once upon a time' as you put indeed put it. I hardly ever use it nowadays, but will certainly be very wary from now on about using it.

I uninstalled all the programs you asked me to successfully bar one. The Antimalware Doctor program wasn't visible on my program list.

I updated my java as requested. I had an automatic update set up. However, this was set on a monthly basis and in the morning. I have a compeltely different sleep pattern now to when I last set this and it must have been missing the updates. I have now changed the update to a weekly setting and at an hour when the computer will almost certainly be switched on.

I didn't have the option checked to keep temporary Java files on my computer. I did use the delete facility anyway in case there were some there from earlier on. The Applications And Applets box could not be checked though. Does that mean there were no applications or applets on there? I went ahead with just deleting the trace and log files.

TFC, MBAM and HijackThis all ran fine. My pc is still doing good at the moment. Here are the logs:

Hello

but unless you think this is causing me a serious problem I will leave the Avira on there. I really haven't noticed any system issues at all since installing it a long while back. If you are adamant that I should remove it, then I while do so.
Some people claim that they have and do run more than one AV on a system with no trouble, but I have seen on more than one occasion that it bring the system down and it may work fine for you, but the possibilities are there and it is not needed and you never know when one of them does an update that will start causing conflicts.

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IAAnotif] C:\Program Files\Intel\Intel Matrix Storage Manager\iaanotif.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IntelMeM] C:\Program Files\Intel\Modem Event Monitor\IntelMEM.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTSysVol] C:\Program Files\Creative\SBAudigy2ZS\Surround Mixer\CTSysVol.exe /r

      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exe"
  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

NOTE**You can research each of those lines >here< and see if you want to keep them or not
just copy the name between the brakets and paste into the search space
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IntelliPoint]

Eset Online Scanner

**Note** You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan - Vista and win 7 right click on IE shortcut and run as admin

I have a couple of quick questions if you don't mind:

1. Do you think my idea about getting the Antimalware Doctor from a fake Windows update icon in my notification area could have been right?

2. Is it likely that I picked anything up from a disreputable website or is it possible I was deliberately hacked? It was just so strange that the first time I came here and set about getting help my pc slowed to a complete freeze. It didn't freeze like that before I came here or since I first started a thread looking for help. Sure, it could be a coincidence, but I have a healthy caution for coincidences. I have been hacked before by the way.

This little gem normaly come from websites that have been hacked or from P2P downloads

2. Is it likely that I picked anything up from a disreputable website or is it possible I was deliberately hacked? Don't have to be a bad wabsite - alot of time a site will get hacked and the owner don't find it for a few hours

I don't think coming to the site you to freeze - but i have seen it that the virus will not let you come here

There are somethings in the online scan I want to remove so run this scrript for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

CODE
File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hlp.dat

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. report from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Hello Gringo. A few things to report. Combofix asked for an update at the start of the process, so I hope that didn't change anything to the drag and drop I did. Also, it didn't give the second warning after I disabled AVG's resident shield. That's a good thing I guess. Finally, pev.cfxxe asked ZoneAlarm for internet access 3 times during the Combofix scan and I agreed. This didn't happen the previous time I ran Combofix. Aside from these minor incidents, I didn't have any actual problems. My pc still seems to be running fine. Here is the Combofix log:

Hello

The rest of the Online scan is only reporting backups created during the course of this fix C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\, and/or items located in System Restore's cache C:\System Volume Information\, Whatever is in these folders can't harm you unless you choose to perform a manual restore. the following steps will remove these backups.

Very well done!! This is my general post for when your logs show no more signs of malware - Please let me know if you still are having problems with your computer and what these problems are.

The following procedure will implement some cleanup procedures. It will also reset your System Restore by flushing out previous restore points and create a new restore point. It will also remove all the backups our tools may have made.

Any programs and logs that are left over you can just be deleted from the desktop. TFC is a free temp file cleaner that is very easy to use, I would keep this and use before you do any scans or when you want to free up some space.

:DeFogger:
To re-enable your Emulation drivers, double click DeFogger to run the tool.
    • The application window will appear
    • Click the Re-enable button to re-enable your CD Emulation drivers
    • Click Yes to continue
    • A 'Finished!' message will appear
    • Click OK
    • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
Your Emulation drivers are now re-enabled.

:Uninstall ComboFix:
  • turn off all active protection software
  • push the "windows key" + "R" (between the "Ctrl" button and "Alt" Button)
  • please copy and past the following into the box ComboFix /Uninstall and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the /Uninstall, it needs to be there.

:remove tools:

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop. This tool will remove all the tools we used to clean your pc.
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
  • If asked to restart the computer, please do so
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

:clear system restore points:

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
  • Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
  • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
  • choose your root drive (normally C:)
  • after it calculates how much space you will save it will open up a new window
  • Select the More options tab at the top of the window
  • Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
  • go back to the disk clean up tab
  • put a checkmark in all - except compress old files (leave this unchecked)
  • click Ok then click yes
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created and clean unneeded files

:Make your Internet Explorer more secure:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

:Make Firefox more secure:

:Turn On Automatic Updates:
    Turn On Automatic Updates
    1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then press ENTER.
    2. Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select one of the following options. We recommend that you select the Automatic (recommended) Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them

If you click this setting, click to select the day and time for scheduled updates to occur. You can schedule Automatic Updates for any time of day. Remember, your computer must be on at the scheduled time for updates to be installed. After you set this option, Windows recognizes when you are online and uses your Internet connection to find updates on the Windows Update Web site or on the Microsoft Update Web site that apply to your computer. Updates are downloaded automatically in the background, and you are not notified or interrupted during this process. An icon appears in the notification area of your taskbar when the updates are being downloaded. You can point to the icon to view the download status. To pause or to resume the download, right-click the icon, and then click Pause or Resume. When the download is completed, another message appears in the notification area so that you can review the updates that are scheduled for installation. If you choose not to install at that time, Windows starts the installation on your set schedule.

or visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

:antispyware programs:

I would reccomend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (all free), and the updating of them regularly:
  • WinPatrol As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge.
  • Spyware Blaster - By altering your registry, this program stops harmful sites from installing things like ActiveX Controls on your machines.
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. We used this to help clean your computer and recomend keeping it and using often.

Hello Gringo. I downloaded WinPatrol and Spyware Blaster as recommended. I already had MBAM downloaded as you know. Everything seems to be running fine and feel free to close the thread in 3 days if you don't hear back from me about a pc relapse. Unfortunately, I don't have a usable Paypal account at the moment. I got ripped off through Ebay and refused to pay off my negative balance on Paypal. I'll be happy to mail some currency ($20 or equivalent) to any global address you nominate though. That's the best I can do i'm afraid! PM me if you want to accept my offer. I'm no Bill Gates, but it all helps like you said.

Thank you very much for all your help! thumbup.gif
