Hi,

First of all, thank you in advance for any help you are gracious enough to give me. I really appreciate it. I have a EEE Netbook, which is running Windows XP with AVG free antivirus. Sadly, it has been infected with the Google Redirect Virus/Malware. I've done considerable reading on the topic as I have been investigating the problems infesting this little machine. Here are some things that may or may not be helpful:

1. I was notified by AVG yesterday that it had found the Svchost.exe virus (trojan). I subsequently downloaded (and purchased) RegCure, which seemed to do a bit of cleanup (??).

2. I have not been able to turn on the Microsoft Firewall for quite some time already. I've looked at their help articles on the subject, and none of their solutions work.

3. Whenever I open up a browser, I get notified by AVG of all kinds of "tracking cookies." The cookie seen the most often is cookie.Atdmt.

4. In looking at the AVG history, I see that I have been infected by several trojans, including Agent2.BCLI and Generic18.AZQZ. They are currently in the "virus vault," and I am assuming they have been dealt with?

5. I have read your Preparation Guide and downloaded DeFogger, DDS, and GMER. DeFogger and DDS went without a hitch. Running the GMER has proven to be a big challenge. If I run it, it may or may not scan for a while, then just reboots itself after briefly flashing to what I call "the blue screen of death." I ran it through the night, woke up several times to find it had rebooted itself, and so I restarted it. I have managed to save several files, but I cannot guarantee them to be complete.

6. Excerpt messages from the reboots: I copied and pasted several of the messages and technical stuff from the GMER reboots.

From Error1:

Stop (blue screen) error caused by a device or driver

You received this message because a hardware device, its driver, or related software has caused a stop error, also called a blue screen error. This type of error means the computer has shut down abruptly to protect itself from potential data corruption or loss. In this case, we were unable to detect the specific device or driver that caused the problem.

From Error2:

avgnsx.exe encountered a problem and needed to close.

C:\DOCUME~1\Kris\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER333d.dir00\appcompat.txt

From Error3:

The system has recovered from a serious error.
BCCode : 4e BCP1 : 00000007 BCP2 : 00041FE7 BCP3 : 00000001

C:\DOCUME~1\Kris\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER31f9.dir00\sysdata.xml

7. I am attaching two GMER logs. "ark" is a log I saved after it had been scanning for a long time but had not yet rebooted. "ark2" is a log I saved in the middle of the night that miraculously seemed to have made it through the scan without having been interrupted by a blue screen/reboot. I wanted you to see both of them because "ark" lists at the top "C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\tcpip.sys" which I did not find in "ark2." It seems I have seen notifications about "tcpip.sys" before, so I wanted to make sure you see that.

8. So here is the DDS Text:

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is Known as a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit <--please read

What this virus does do.
QUOTE
Functionality
The functionality that the Trojan exhibits implies that it has been designed with profit-making as its primary objective. Making money from the Web typically involves generating Web traffic, installing pay-per-install software and also by generating sales leads for other Web sites and services of a dubious nature. It tries to achieve its objective by employing an array of techniques to try and make the user participate in these income-generating activities.

What the virus can do.
QUOTE
Backdoor.Tidserv is a Trojan horse that uses an advanced rootkit to hide itself. It also displays advertisements, redirects user search results, and opens a back door on the compromised computer.

This "could" allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

I'll go ahead and give it a shot, Gringo. This is my netbook, and as such, I don't make financial transactions on it.

I'm in the process of running the combofix, and contrary to the instructions, it has given me a message that said rootkit activity has been detected and needs to reboot the machine....with only "ok" as the option. It has rebooted now and is now finishing the scan......without bringing the desktop up.

Will post more when it is finished...

Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.
If you don't like Adobe Reader (33.5 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(3.5MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.
