I am getting unwanted redirects on various web sites, especially the ones that are for virus protection. When I try to update Malwarebytes or Norton, I get a message that internet explorer cannot open that site. Running Malwarebytes or Norton with my old update will not find anything to stop the redirects.

Agreed. This is a malware issue, not a hacked computer. As stated, follow the steps in the link provided by driesiooo.
