I'm trying to help my mother-in-law's cousin. Her computer began to freeze up and show error messages saying AOL files were corrupt and to run scan disk. The messages are mostly similar to this one:

aol.suiteFramework.aol.aolsystrayservice~1860849369:AOLSoftwar
The file or directory C:\Documents and Settings\Taskmaster\Local Settings\Application Data\AOL\UserProfiles\1187215707\taskmaster\metrics\cmls_ms.tlv is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility.

and there is another one like this:

waol.exe - Corrupt File
The file or directory C:\Documents and Settings\Taskmaster\Cookies\taskmaster@scorecardresearch[6].txt is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility.

I could not get on AOL and I could not get on Internet Expolrer. So the first thing I did was completely uninstall AOL and reinstall it. I downloaded SuperAntiSpyware and ran it thru twice. Found mostly adware from where she had been on the shopping network and cleaned it up. Copied and Pasted log files to post. Then I downloaded Malwarebytes and ran it thru. Found more adware and Trojan.Agent. Removed it and have added that log too. Then I downloaded Wise Disk Cleaner and Wise Registry Cleaner and ran them thru. Cleaning and removing unnecessary files from the hard drive. Then I used the Defragmenter on Wise Disk Cleaner to Defragment the hard Drive but it didn't seem to do a good job so I tried to use the Windows Defragmenter. Windows wouldn't work because it said scan disk was scheduled to run.

Anyway, she looks like she's got too much stuff on here. She's got Windows Defender, AVG Free 8.5 that she's not using, Microsoft Security Essentials that she is using, and Windows Firewall was turned on. She previously had Limewire and Vuse from when her grandchildren downloaded it but someone removed it previously she said.

I've also added and attached the other required logs for your inspection. Thank you for your assistance.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
  1. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  2. Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:
Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
    • The application window will appear
    • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
    • Click Yes to continue
    • A 'Finished!' message will appear
    • Click OK
    • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:
Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link1
    Link2
    Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.
    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
      • DDS.txt
      • Attach.txt
    • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
    • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
    • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Scan With RKUnHooker
  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.

I understand the delay in your repsonse. It was longer than usual but you guys are the best so I don't mind waiting. I appreciate your response and I thank you in advance for your help. I was made aware of another problem after I sent my original post. I found out that IE will not start. It looks like she's running IE8. I installed AOL 9.5 before my first post to be able to get on line. She's running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3. Looking forward to your next reply. Here are the new logs.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

I did not have any problems running ComboFix. I did get a prompt to update Adobe while ComboFix was running but I just hit the later button. I kept getting the pop up messages about the corrupt AOL files and there are some new ones that have appeared since my first post. The message is the same its just the shape and body of the message is different. But a new error message did appear while ComboFix was running. It said that .......The file or directory at C:\$Mft is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility. Other than that the computer seems to be running the same.
Oh, Oh, Oh, ...I just checked and did find something new. I didn't mention it before but the IE icon on my friends desktop did read "Intranet Explorer". I thought it funny that it was Intra instead of Inter and thought I had just never noticed that's why I didn't mention it. I just now checked and its back to Internet Explorer and it works. I can get on IE now.
We are making progress. Here is the ComboFix log.

run chkdsk
  • Got to Start, Run and type cmd and hit Enter
  • When the command window comes up, type: chkdsk c:
  • hit Enter again.
  • Maximize the command window, and wait for the scan to finish.
  • Read the results carefully to see if it says that it found problems with your file system.
IF it has found any problems with your file system,
  • Go To Start, Run and type cmd
  • hit Enter
  • Type this into the command window at the prompt:
      chkdsk c: /F <==notice the /F, with one space between c: and /F
  • hit Enter
  • You will get a message that the volume is locked, and a request to do the repair on Reboot.
  • Answer Y
  • Then type exit to close the Command window.
  • Go to Start, Turn Off Computer and choose Reboot
  • It will scan again and make the repairs as the first part of the reboot process.

After it reboots, run the first sequence again (without the /F parameter), and see if it still shows an error.
Tell me what it found originally, and if there was a problem, whether the final sequence showed no errors.
It's possible that the chkdsk c: /F sequence may have to be run on reboot twice to pick up everything.

Let me know how things are after

I ran the scan disk sequence 3 times and got the same log results. I'm still getting the corrupt AOL file messages. I could not copy/paste the results of the scan disk so I did a screen shot and put it here. I hope that is all right. When I restarted the computer it did not do like I've seen it do before when I had a scan disk scheduled. It just shut down, then restarted windows and went straight to the desk top. I am used to seeing it go to a blue screen and running thru checking files and sectors when running scan disk on start up and it did not do that so I am wondering if I did something wrong. Here is the screen shot of the scan disk log and I hope it is ok to include it here.

Hello

It seems the only problem is with AOL

So lets rip out everything from aol and then do a clean install

first go to this page and download the free uninstaller - http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninst...e_download.html

Next find and uninstall anything to do with AOL

AOL Uninstaller (Choose which Products to Remove)
AOL Toolbar
Download Updater (AOL LLC)
Uninstall AOL Emergency Connect Utility 1.0

Next I want you to run this script for me

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

CODE
Folder::
C:\Documents and Settings\Taskmaster\Local Settings\Application Data\AOL
C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL
C:\Program Files\AOL 9.5
C:\program files\aol toolbar
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\AOL Toolbar
c:\program files\Common Files\aolshare
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\AOL Downloads
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\AOL

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.

Well it seems I've messed it up bad now. I installed the Revo Uninstaller Pro and was uninstalling the AOL files and after uninstalling each it would say scan for leftover registry items. And anything it found I told it to delete thinking that something bad could be hiding in the registry. Well apparently I've deleted some important files because now the computer won't hardly work at all. I can't get on IE and I can't get Revo to start so I can do a restore. I can't do a system restore either. I'm afraid to turn it off and reboot. Figured I'd let you know first before I messed it up any further. Sorry.

restart the computer, nothing there to affect the way the computer runs - revo has been trusted to uninstall things for awhile now

Revo may have not done anything wrong but obviously I did. After it removed the files it said Scan for leftover Registry entries which I did. On the smaller tree I just selected the black entries that had AOL in the string. When it uninstall AOL itself it had such a big tree that I just hit select all I think included My Computer and other files on down the string. I just thought they would be leftover empty folders that needed to be deleted.

I had to hard shut down the computer by holding down the power button. When I restarted it come back on to the blue screen that says Microsoft Windows XP and has the logo on it. I'm sure I've deleted important files.

Didn't work. Just got the same blue screen. Tried tapping F8 during start up. Got the black screen where I could start in safe mode but did not see any option to select the Microsoft Recovery Console so did not go there.
