I seem to have the Apmanager virus, but I cannot follow the advice posted in various places as windows will not load . After logging on a message pops up "apmanager has encountered a problem and needs to close" and then nothing happens, my desktop background picture is displayed, but no icons, programs, tool bar etc.. just the picture. I cannot access the start menu or task manager.

Safe mode produces the same results. I was able to run Safe Mode with the command prompt and run a system restore to a previous date, but got the same results when the computer booted with the new settings.

Do I have any options short of reinstalling windows XP?

I would be greatful for any help. Thanks.

Sorry for the delay.
  • Do you still desire help?
  • What OS are you running?
  • Please press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC then File then New Task (Run) and type explorer.exe and press Enter. Did that re-establish your desktop?

Hello, I have moved this to the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs forum. It will stay here.
