When you serve on an aircraft carrier, the only place allowed for the ships company and guests to observe air operations in up on top of the island, that tall structure that all aircraft carriers have towering over the flight deck. The ship turns into the wind, 30 knots plus, and the exhaust of the planes, with their engines screaming just before launch, washes over you, even way up there.

That is the steel beach where I spent many hours a long time ago.

I'm an old sea dog here to learn new tricks.
