I previously had sp3 installed but following getting infected with a rootkit I managed to do a repair installation and got back to sp2. My system has now been cleaned but when I try to install sp3 it gets about 3/4 of the way through the installation when I get an error saying sp3 failed to install. It then proceeds to roll back to sp2.

Any suggestions?

Hi .

I don't believe that a repair install of XP is an effective remedy for a rootkit or any other type of malware. I'm moving your thread to the Am I Infected forum so that someone more knowledgeable than I...can have a closer look and attempt to render you the assistance you need.

I previously posted in the 'Am I infected' and then was transferred to the '....malware removal logs' and was assisted by Reid who ran through the malware problems I had and declared my PC clean. I am now trying to install SP3 and am having problems.

Can you move my post back unless you still think it is a malware issue.

I tried uninstalling IE8 and disabling my AV then trying to install SP3. It got to roughly the same point (i.e. 75% through the installation) and then a pop up with Access is Denied appeared which was then followed by another message confirming that SP3 couldn't be installed.

I ran one of the Microsoft Fixit tools which then allowed SP3 to install with no problems.
