Hello everyone,

It's been 3 months I'm having this problem. All the icons of my desktops have disappeared, but i can access what was present on my desktop from "my documents" folder.

Also, the right click option of my mouse no more works on the desktop.

The recycle bin is always empty, even when i send items to it. Which means when i delete an item, i lose it completely!

My shut down and stand-by options have also disappeared from my task bar. I have to log off to be able to shut the computer.

A friend advised me to use Combofix to get rid of this problem.

I am doubtful of what to do will be grateful if i can get advice from you! Please let me know.

Thanks!

ComboFix is an extremely powerful tool which should only be used when instructed to do so by someone who has been properly trained. ComboFix is intended by its creator to be "used under the guidance and supervision of an expert", NOT for private use. Please read Combofix's Disclaimer. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.

With the combination of problems that you have I suspect that you may have an infection. I will ask a moderator to move this topic to the Am I Infected forum where there are highly trained staff members who are best suited to tackle your problem.

Please be patient, they are very busy.

Hello I am moving this as suggested to the Am I Infected forun from XP.

Have you run ComboFix yet? if not do not.

Next run MBAM (MalwareBytes):

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.46) and save it to your desktop.
Before you save it rename it to say zztoy.exe

alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

You're welcome! Looks like you are well infectyed and will need a few scans and tools but so far nothing we cannot get.

Let's do this now.

Next run ATF and SAS: If you cannot access Safe Mode, run in normal ,but let me know.

Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".

From your regular user account..
Download Attribune's ATF Cleaner and then SUPERAntiSpyware , Free Home Version. Save both to desktop ..
DO NOT run yet.
Open SUPER from icon and install and Update it
Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
Close browsers before scanning.
Scan for tracking cookies.
Terminate memory threats before quarantining
.
Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program. DO NOT run yet.

Now reboot into Safe Mode: How to enter safe mode(XP)
Using the F8 Method
Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode
.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox or Opera browser click that browser at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program
.

NOW Scan with SUPER
Open from the desktop icon or the program Files list
On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
Perform a Complete scan. After scan,Verify they are all checked.
Click OK on the summary screen to quarantine all found items.
If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.

To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log.
A text file will open in your default text editor.
Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
Click Close to exit the program.

Rerun MBAM (MalwareBytes) like this:

Open MBAM in normal/regular mode and click Update tab, select Check for Updates, when done
click Scanner tab, select FULL scan and scan (normal mode).
After scan click Remove Selected, Post new scan log and Reboot into normal mode.
Please ask any needed questions, post logs and Let us know how the PC is running now.

Hello boopme,
Thanks again for your help. I think i should be mentioning the following observations to you:
1) My computer has slowed down since i downloaded MBAM, i therefore un-installed it..
2) when programs don't respond, for example Windows Messenger and Mozilla firefox, i get the following message box: " this operation has been cancelled due to restriction in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator"

I don't know what it means but i will follow your advice and proceed with ATF and SuperAntiSpyware.

Thanking you once again for your assistance. I'm really a sort of laggard in terms of computers, but it's an important tool.

1)Is SAS running in the task bar,by the clock? If so right click and End/Quit the application. see if you speed up.

2)This step involves making changes in the registry. Always back up your registry before making any changes.

Go to Start Run and type: regedit
Click OK.
On the left side, click to highlight My Computer at the top.
Go up to File Export
Make sure in that window there is a tick next to "All" under Export Branch.
Leave the "Save As Type" as "Registration Files".
Under "Filename" put RegBackup.
Choose to save it to C:\
Click save and then go to File Exit.

Or you can download and use ERUNTwhich is an excellent free tool that allows you to to take a snapshot (backup) of your registry before making changes and restore it when needed.
Download THIS file, unzip it and double click to extract the registry.

Now perform an online scan with ESET preferably from IE.
ESET
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the ESET Online Scanner button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Export to text file... to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Eset Smart Installer icon on your desktop.
  • Check the "YES, I accept the Terms of Use"
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push "List of found threats"
  • Push "Export to text file", and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the "<<Back" button.
  • Push Finish
In your next reply, please include the following:
  • Eset Scan Log

NOTE: In some instances if no malware is found there will be no log produced.

Hello boopme,

I did the back-up and the ESET ONLINE SCAN..Find enclosed the scan log below. I did not remove the threats , should i have removed them using the ESET?

i have not done the steps you said in your earlier reply: ATF Cleaner and SuperAntispyware, although i have already downloaded them. Should i do them now?

Thanks once again for your help. I hope this problem will be solved soon..

Hello boopme,

Sorry for taking long to post back. The pc still the same, it actually slowed down a bit these last days and I encountered several problems like computer performing slow sometimes, virtual memory low, size of paging file too small or no paging file and running low on disk space on WINDOWS XP C:

I ran ATF Cleaner and SAS Scan in normal mode (could not access safe mode)

The results of the full scan:

We need to run the MBAM,we can remove it again after, ithink it will run better now after thise removals.
Are you still having the paging file issues? This is an XP PC?

Yes, it is a Windows XP pc. No more paging file problem but each time I start it up, i get a tab saying: " cannot find script file C:\WINDOWS\system32\winmgmt.vbe"

Thanks, i'll run MBAM and post the result.

Its not unusual to receive such an error after using specialized fix tools.

A "Cannot find...", "Could not run...", "Error loading... or "specific module could not be found" message is usually related to malware that was set to run at startup but has been deleted. Windows is trying to load this file but cannot locate it since the file was mostly likely removed during an anti-virus or anti-malware scan. However, an associated orphaned registry entry remains and is telling Windows to load the file when you boot up. Since the file no longer exists, Windows will display an error message. You need to remove this registry entry so Windows stops searching for the file when it loads.

To resolve this, download Autoruns, search for the related entry and then delete it.

Create a new folder on your hard drive called AutoRuns (C:\AutoRuns) and extract (unzip) the file there. (click here if you're not sure how to do this.)
Open the folder and double-click on autoruns.exe to launch it.
Please be patient as it scans and populates the entries.
When done scanning, it will say Ready at the bottom.
Scroll through the list and look for a startup entry related to the file(s) in the error message. --> winmgmt.vbe
Right-click on the entry and choose delete.
Reboot your computer and see if the startup error returns.

I downloaded and ran the AutoRun application. but I could not find an entry with "winmgmt.vbe"

There's another file though that i found on AutoRuns "Rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\pfgdiwck.dll",s"

A window showing this link also appears at start up on my pc, but that's since a long time and i usually ignored it. Is it an orphan registry entry and should i delete it?
