Hello, Sorry for the long read!!!!

I'm new to the forum, i've tried to make sure I've got all the information you need upfront, my apologies if I missed something. I'm not the brightest crayon in the box, but I work on a Service Desk, so I know enough to be dangerous... which is probably partly why I'm also paranoid. LOL

I detected a virus on my Desktop PC a couple weeks ago. This PC has since been formatted. However, I have a laptop that I want to make sure is not infected also. I can't give you all the details of my main PC because I have yet to reinstall everything to get system info, but it is a dual core that was running Windows XP HOme Edition at the time of the attack.

My laptop is this:
Toshiba Qosmio X505
Intel Core i7 CPU, Q720 1.6 GHz
4G RAM
64-Bit OS
Win 7

Background on the issue:

The desktop PC was having explorer.exe issues where it was clocking incessantly with nothing running.
I had Norton's 360 installed on it, but it was not detecting anything.
Tried MalwareBytes, Spybot, Superantispyware, and even Trend Housecall. All found nothing.
However, every time I tried to run gmer, it would blue screen and crash/reboot.
I tried to run a restore, that failed (errored that it couldn't restore, nothing was changed etc).
Even tried running restore from Safe mode, same issue.
Tried gmer in safe mode, it would still bluescreen and crash.
I tried running a repair using my Windows XP cd, but there were so many dlls it could not fix, it rendered it pretty much useless. It would not even boot.
So I formatted both internal drives.
I have not touched it since.

I had a USB drive that I had hooked up at the time and I feared it was infected. I was not disappointed. I knew there was a chance it may populate to the laptop, but the laptop was easier to recover I thought, since it was fairly new and had hardly anything on it other than Nortons and Firefox. Here's the series of events in short:

I hooked up the external usb drive to my laptop and attempted to format the drive. I got a couple permissions errors, but eventually it claimed it did it.
I tried it again just to be sure, and it claimed it was successful without permissions errors.
I feared that something had transferred, so I attempted to run a system restore. It failed. Could not restore, nothing was changed... blah blah.
So I hard powered off the laptop, and started it back up in Safe mode.
Right at startup, it said it had restored successfuly, which I found odd.
So I ran restore again from Safe mode to be sure. It said it was successful.
I was still not feeling confident at that point, so I called Toshiba and got the factory reset steps and reinstalled everything from the hidden partition.
I then decided to try reading a data backup dvd that I had created from my desktop prior to finding the issue on my desktop PC.
Autorun came up, and after all the virus information I read online, and all the troubles above, I realized at that moment that I could have just hosed myself yet again.
But since it could potentially be on the other partition as well, I figured I might as well get it analyzed and find out if I need to get a recovery disk, rather than
doing the factory reset again (only to find out later that didn't do the job).
I tried running a scan on the backup DVD since Norton's didn't see anything on my laptop, but it was so painfully slow, that after 3 hours and only 27000 files scanned, I gave up.
Tried running MRT (Windows tool) on the DVD, and it didn't find anything, but I don't trust that fully.

So, here I am, with a 64-bit system and a Hijackthis log that I know doesn't always show things so clearly for 64-bit.... and not sure what to make of it all.

Can someone please help me analyze this log and make sure I do not have something lurking? Thank you upfront for any assistance you can provide.

Gmer would not run (ran as admin), apparently it doesn't play nice with 64-bit. At startup of gmer - Error: "C:\Windows\system32\config\system: The system cannot find the file specified."

No rootkit warning.

Ran scan anyway, got Error: "C:\Windows\system32\config\system: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."
Clicked OK, no log created, but prompted "Gmer hasn't found any system modification."

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer! welcome.gif

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Hello, and thank you BlindFaith for your assistance.

1. CD Emulator has been deactivated since my first post.
2. As stated in my first post, Gmer will not run. I tried again just to be sure, but I got the same thing (Probably due to having Win 7):

Gmer would not run (ran as admin), apparently it doesn't play nice with 64-bit. At startup of gmer - Error: "C:\Windows\system32\config\system: The system cannot find the file specified."

No rootkit warning.
All greyed (inactive) except:
Services
Registry
Files

Ran scan anyway, got Error: "C:\Windows\system32\config\system: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."
Clicked OK, no log created, but prompted "Gmer hasn't found any system modification."
