Hello, everyone!

I am new here. My computer was infected with Win32/ElKern.C, Logger.CQT, Logger.CNL and Logger.BT. Using AVG and Malwarebytes, I was able to remove them. I also removed some minor add ons and hijackers of which the names escape right now. I would like to have someone look at my Hijackthis log to confirm that it is clean now. I also noticed a listing in my HijackThis log 016 section for symantec. Since I no longer use NAV, is it safe to check and fix this?

Thank you so much!

Ben

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below I will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

And

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Then

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

Thank you for your response. Because of the time difference, it will take about a day or so for me to perform the actions you requested. I am very happy for your response and I will work to complete the tasks you have asked for as quickly as possible.

Sincerely,

Ben

============= FINISH: 22:56:09.06 ===============

I ran defogger. Although I did not specifically receive an error message, the program just stopped after clicking the finished message and the disable enable CD Emulation drivers message box remained. I noticed there was defogger_disable log on the desktop. So, I closed the disable enable message box and I am pasting the defogger_disable log here:

I then downloaded and attempt to scan with GMER. Unfortunately the computer suddenly shutdown and restarted during the scan. I then attempted to scan with GMER in safe mode. Again, the computer shutdown and restarted. Both times there was a message telling me the computer had recovered from a serious error. One safe mode scan I noticed it was scan an area called 'shells' or 'shell'. Sorry I can't be more specific about that part. It shut down quite suddenly.

Please let me know what I should do next. I will be going to sleep, but I will check back in and respond as soon as possible.

Thank you so much,

Ben

Gmer has been causing problems lately so it doesn't necessarily mean that you have an infection here.

Please run MBRCheck

Please download MBRCheck to your desktop.

1. Double click MBRCheck.exe to run it (Right click and run as Administrator for Vista).
2. It will open a black window, please do not fix anything (if it gives you an option).
3. Exit that window and it will produce a log (MBRCheck_date_time).
4. Please post that log when you reply.

I forgot to ask, should I enable CD Emulation drivers that I disabled when attempting to use defogger?

Before you enable the CD emulations driver please run ESET
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan

Hello, again!

I ran the ESET OnlineScan and it did not find any malware, so no log was produced.

Thank you so much for your time, m0le!

I ran ATF and it cleaned out quite a bit of stuff, too. (Over 400MB) The computer does seem to be running fine. However, in the past year or so the computer does tend to take much longer than it used to to start up. It can be a bit slow when using the internet. For example, sometime when I am typing in an box such as this to enter text, the letters come up slower than I am typing them. Also, after clicking on a tab in IE 8, it tends to take bit before the new tab appears. It also sometimes takes a bit of time before a webpage fully loads. However, I am assuming these are because the computer is getting older.

I am glad to get a clean bill of health! Thank you again for all your time and effort! I really appreciate it!

Ben

Startup programs can drag down the speed the PC boots.

Please download StartupLite. to your desktop and run it. It will explain any optional auto-start programs on your system, and offer the option to stop these programs from starting at startup. This will result in fewer programs running when you boot your system, and should improve performance.

The age of the PC can slow down the reaction time but take a look at this resource to check for other possible causes.

I recommend that you read this tutorial on the site which explains what you can do to speed up your PC.

Also, you seem to have Java but you may want to update it.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Jdk 6 Update 21 (JDK or JRE)".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u21-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

You're clean. Good stuff! thumbup2.gif

Let's do some clearing up

Download and Run OTC

We will now remove the tools we used during this fix using OTC.
  • Download OTC by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click icon to start the program. If you are using Vista, please right-click and choose run as administrator
  • Then Click the big button.
  • You will get a prompt saying "Being Cleanup Process". Please select Yes.
  • Restart your computer when prompted.

[/list]
If you still have any tools or logs leftover on your computer you can go ahead and delete those off of your computer now.

Here's some advice on how you can keep your PC clean

Use and update your AntiVirus Software

You must have a good antivirus. There are plenty to choose from but I personally recommend the free options of Avast and Avira Antivir. If you want to purchase a security program then I recommend any of the following: AVG, Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky and ESET Nod32.

It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. If you use a commercial antivirus program you must make sure you keep renewing your subscription. Otherwise, once your subscription runs out, you may not be able to update the programs virus definitions.

Make sure your applications have all of their updates

It is also possible for other programs on your computer to have security vulnerability that can allow malware to infect you. Therefore, it is also a good idea to check for the latest versions of commonly installed applications that are regularly patched to fix vulnerabilities. You can check these by visiting Secunia Software Inspector and Calendar of Updates.

Install an AntiSpyware Program

A highly recommended AntiSpyware program is SuperAntiSpyware. You can download the free Home Version. or the Pro version for a 15 day trial period.

Installing this or another recommended program will provide spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should scan your computer with an AntiSpyware program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

Finally, here's a treasure trove of antivirus, antimalware and antispyware resources

That's it, happy surfing!

Cheers.

Actually, I have a question about Java Run Time. I wanted to uninstall it in the past before updated to the newest version. However, for some reason, I don't see it listed in the add and remove list. Would it still be okay to update to the newest version using the link you have provided?
