Hello jimmydur,

Please avoid installing/uninstalling or updating any programs and attempting any unsupervised fixes or scans. This can make helping you impossible.

I see you previously downloaded RegistryMechanic. blink.gif

This forum and I DO NOT recommend registry cleaners, as they may damage rather than fix your registry.
Use a "registry cleaner" only if you have a good knowledge of registry and know if a certian key/value is safe to remove.
Cleaning registry will not improve system performance even though there is a lot of orphaned keys.
IMHO, if Microsoft thought a registry cleaner was necessary, it would have built one in to Windows XP.

In summary, use a registry cleaner at your own risk.
If you corrupt the registry, then you corrupt Windows.

Read this: Should I use a Registry Cleaner:
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28099

Mark Russinovich wrote:

No, even if the registry was massively bloated there would be little impact on the performance of anything other than exhaustive searches (ed. of the registry itself).

On Win2K Terminal Server systems, however, there is a limit on the total amount of Registry data that can be loaded and so large profile hives can limit the number of users that can be logged on simultaneously.

I haven't and never will implement a Registry cleaner since it's of little practical use on anything other than Win2K terminal servers and developing one that's both safe and effective requires a huge amount of application-specific knowledge.

SifuMike, Thanks so much for your help. Below are logs for Security Check, GooredFix, MalwareBytes and a new HijackThis log. I uninstalled Registry Mechanic and updated to the new version of Avast, per your recommendations (no threats found by Avast.) I had previously run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and computer was clean, but as you can see deeper scan found 2 threats which were removed.

Hi jimmydur,

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
Please download Java Version 6 Update 21
  • Click the "Free Java Download" button.
  • Click "Free Java Download" again
  • Save the file jxpiinstall.exe to your desktop
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    Java™ 6 Update 20
    Java™ 6 Update 5

  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jxpiinstall.exe to install the newest version.

Please make sure you turn on the Java Automatic Update Feature
http://java.com/en/download/help/java_update.xml#howto

Note: This feature is available only on Windows XP, 2003, 2000 (SP2 or higher) and set by default for these operating systems.
Then you will not have to remember to update it when Java introduces a new version.
Java is updated very frequently, and the old versions are malware magnets.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

We need to run GMER for rootkits.

If you having trouble running GMER, try running it in the Safe Mode.
QUOTE
How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key.

Please download GMER from one of the following locations, and save it to your desktop:

Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
Zip Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
Close any and all open programs, as this process may crash your computer.
Double click or on your desktop.
Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.

You may see this window. If you do, click No.

Click on and wait for the scan to finish.

Please double-click on the gmer.exe program.

Once you double-click the icon a Windows security warning may appear asking if you are sure you would like to run the program. If this warning appears, please click on the Run button to allow GMER to start.
If no warning appeared then you should just continue.

You will now see the main GMER window.
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan, please click on the NO button.
We now need to configure GMER to not use some settings.
Please uncheck the following settings that we do not want in our scan.
IAT/EAT

When done, the screen should look similar to below.

Once your screen look similar to the above, click on the Scan button to scan your computer for rootkits. This may take a while, so please be patient. When it has finished you will be back at the main screen as shown below.

You now need need to save the rootkit scan report to your Desktop by clicking on the Save ... button as designated by the red arrow in the picture above.
A screen will open asking where you would like to save the report.

SifuMike,

Java updated to Version 6 Update 21

My Malwarebytes Database will not update. Every time I try, it gives me an error message. I reinstalled the version off the Malwarebytes website and it is also 4052.

Had a Blue Screen crash while running GMER, so I will try it in safe mode.

Hi Jimmy,

It is quite common for GMER to give a blue screen of death (BSOD) while running it.

Safe Mode will probably work. smile.gif

If you can't update MBAM, manually download the database installer from
http://malwarebytes.gt500.org/database.jsp

Then run it and post its log.

Sifu Mike,

Ran GMER ALL NIGHT in Safe Mode and it still did not complete the process. I will try again in regular mode and see if it crashes again.

Hi Jimmy,

It should not take all night to run to completion.

Did you uncheck the following settings that we do not want in our scan? (refer to the picture in the previous GMER instructions)
IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive, which is typically C:\
Show All (This is important, so do not miss it.)

Hi Jimmy,

I think you clicked on the wrong link. Click on Download MBAM-rules.

Hey SifuMike,

All settings just as you instructed, unchecked IAT/EAT, only checked C drive, unchecked Show All. Honest.

Also, Download of MBAM-rules still does not work. Gives instant Server not found message. All googles of mbam-rules.exe do not work either. Can you download it? If so, can you email to me?

Hi Jimmy,

Lets try another way.

Please download RKill by Grinler from one of the 4 links below and save it to your desktop

Link #1
Link #2
Link #3
Link #4
  • Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Download Link #1.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click the RKill desktop icon.
If you are using Vista please right click and run as Admin!
  • A black screen will briefly flash indicating a successful run.
  • If this does not occur please delete that application and download Link #2.
  • Continue process until the tool runs.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links tell me about it.
Do not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again. Or if rebooting is required run it again.

Now run see if you can update Malwarebytes.
If you can update it, then run Malwarebytes and post its log.
