I been having this problem for the past week. Every time i go to shut down or restart my laptop, it always just hangs on the screen that says "saving your settings." I've searched through the web for answers trying different things like "regedit" and changing the values, I've also tried the Microsoft user profile hive cleaner and still nothing seems to work. I did recently install Rosetta Stone might that have anything to do with the problem. My laptop has Windows XP SP3. Can anyone please help me? I would really appreciate it!!

Oh sorry I should have included that, it doesn't shut off. The only way it will shut off is by me pressing the power button.

Ok, I found an obscure reference to nvidia causing this problem. Here's the work around...

Go to Start > Run and type services.msc, or just copy and paste this. Locate the nVidia Driver Helper item and right click it. Select Properties. Set the startup value of the service to Manual or Disabled.

This came from this site.

I can't seem to locate the Nvidia Driver Helper by doing what you instructed.

Would it be under another name?
