Moderator EDIT: I moved this as I do not believe it is malwae related. I moved you to XP as you did not specify the Operating system. If it's another let us know and we will correct this,~~boopme

Out of the blue my laptop just went off 2 days ago, except it wasn't completely off: The screen was all dark except for at the bottom where you could just make out "Microsoft Corporation" in white, faded writing. It was unresponsive in this state so I plugged it out, and let the battery go. It ran out if battery after a while, then I turned it back on.

When it was loading up it said something along the lines of "cannot restart...fix problem?" I clicked yes, then it tried to restore my laptop to an earlier stage but I dont think I ever backed it up (stupid, I know) so I clicked cancel, then it tried something else, then it asked me to restart. When I restarted It loaded up fine, I logged in, then it went all black again as I described in step 1. The cycle then repeats all over again.

Also, this may be of note. The first time this happened, windows security came up saying it had detected a virus, the word "trojan was definitely mentioned, so I "fixed it", then it said I had to restart to complete the process, so i clicked on it, but it wouldn't restart. I think it just went off then suddenly as described above and that as the first time.

Any idea what this is, and is it fixable? Quite pissed off as the laptop is not even a year old.

Hi smile.gif.

Manufacturer and model of system, please?

In the future...please try to provide exact wording of error messages. Phrasing such as you posted regarding such...is pretty much worthless, IMO. There are thousands of different error messages pertaining to any given system...exact wording is key if one is trying to understand what might be wrong.

What version of Windows is installed?

Do you have installations discs for Windows?

Louis

Hello. Lenovo T400s. Windows vista.

Not sure if I have installation discs, should have I guess. Would installing them mean I lose everything?

I'll post up the exact wording of the error messages soon!

This sure should be fixable, but it would greatly help us if you could provide us with some more details as hamluis and synetech asked.

Im actually not getting those error messages anymore, but if I do ill post them up.

I tried startup repair, that failed, then I resotred to 5 days ago, which i think is the day before the problems started, but taht didnt help.

The computer shuts down everytime I run an antivirus now. before this it let me run avg, but when infection as detected i was asked if i wanted to"force removal" of threat. When I said yes I was told this could cause "system crash" so I clicked no.

Whenever I try to run malaware I get the following: "error code: 714 (0,9)"

When i ran it in safe mode, I ran avg, but all it did was scan, no removal. Im all out of ideas folks, everytime I run an antivirus it shuts down, and even if I dont it shuts down after about an hour anyway.

As not to move this topic any more around than it has already been, lets see if we are dealing with rootkits or not; afterwards I will move this topic accordingly.

Please download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your Desktop
  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE to run it
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest
  • Click OK
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report
  • Save the report to your Desktop
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

regards, Elise

Can you please give me the exact detection AVG does (the one it cannot remove)? Please include the filepath if possible.

regards, Elise

The one that caused the messgae saying the system might crash? There were lots of them, but the computer doesn't even let me scan avg anymore. I'll try again anyway

Ok, for some reason everytime when I boot up I have to install avg from the set up. Last time I rebooted even the installer was gone. Got it again and began installing. Halfway through it said to remove all other anti-virus programs and then reinstall. I had forgotten those programs were tehre, I had deleted them, but they are back now due to a system restore.

So I went to delete them (miscrosoft security essentials and f-secure), but found that f-secure would not unistall ("restart computer and try again. Detailed description: uninstallation plug-in report error). I did not try to uninstall MS security essentials, but went back to install avg.

I went ahead with installing it regardless of my other antivirus prgrams ("not recommended"). Midway through the installation the computer shutdown. sad.gif

I rebooted, a few secinds later a box comes up with "roxio cd player uninstalling" (this was happening a good bit, must be part of the virus). Then the computer shutdown again. I rebooted again, another box came up about "itunes not installing correctly" even though I didnt click anything to do with it and the computer shutdown again. I rebooted and it shut down once more immediately.

I have left it since then. Am I screwed? hysterical.gif

For now, please do not install any other security programs, instead lets move this topic to the malware removal section and have a closer look.

OTL
-----
Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Quick Scan button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTListIt.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized

Its not shutting down immediately any more, its back to the old thing of staying on for a while.

Are there supposed to be links in your instructions above? I so they aren't working.

I'm not sure how to reopen OTL on my desktop
