Hello, thank you for your help.

I have a Dell laptop that's infected. It normally runs on a wireless connection but currently unable to access internet so my communication will be a direct connected desktop. Everything has to be downloaded to a flash drive and then transfered (run) from the flash drive on the laptop.

Symptoms started with a couple of chkdsk running whenever windows started, always found no errors. Then cntrl-alt-del wouldn't work, norton and malwarebytes icons disappered and internet had no access. Found another path to norton, ran it and after a while it disappeared. Malwarebytes came up with an error (I think it said it couldn't find a dll). I tried rkill in all of it's different naming conventions and they all error with "system cannot find the path specified" and "process terminated by rkill or while it was running". I was able to download malwarebytes on desktop onto flash drive and then was able to run it on the laptop (full scan) and it found nothing. I was also able to run norton in the same manner and it found nothing. The link for gmer in the Preperation Guide doc didn't work so I went to gmer website, downloaded gmer to flash drive, ran it on laptop and after a long period of time searching files the system hangs, can only hard reboot. I did this twice and same results.

Following is copied dds.txt and attached attach.txt. Any help is greatly appreciated. One additional question, if I was to reformat and reinstall all software and then load data files, with the current virus/malware/rootkit crap, couldn't the malicious code be in the data files themselves? Cheers

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:

  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

Same circumstances as previously stated. Can't run rkill, can't run gmer. Tried running OTL after your last post and I will restate the results:

the infected computer is a laptop and I am now writing this on a desktop. In order to download and run the OTL, I had to uncheck the options - lan settings - Proxy Server on the laptop and was able to temporarily get on the internet. I downloaded OTL, copy/pasted the text, hit RUN SCAN and after a bit it got stuck on the following
"looking for newly created files c:\windows\system32\dllcache\digihlc.dll . . . ."
After this the system hung, couldn't run ctl-alt-del and it went to blue screen "Problem detected....Physical memory dump."

I'm not sure which logs you want me to post. I could re-do dds.txt/attach.txt

Please advise. Thank You

Hi,

I would rather have you try rootkit unhooker vor now:

Please download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your Desktop
  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE to run it
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest
  • Click OK
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report
  • Save the report to your Desktop
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Hi,

please run ComboFix next:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Hi,

the logs are looking good so far.

Download and run Win32kDiag:
  1. Download Win32kDiag from any of the following locations and save it to your Desktop.
  2. Double-click Win32kDiag.exe to run Win32kDiag and let it finish.
  3. When it states "Finished! Press any key to exit...", press any key on your keyboard to close the program.
  4. Double-click on the Win32kDiag.txt file that is located on your Desktop and post the entire contents of that log as a reply to this topic.

Hello,

Sorry for the delay in responding. Most things seem to work ok but when I run norton 360 virus & spyware scan, when it gets to windows\system32\dllcache\devldr32.exe is hangs the computer and sometimes goes to blue screen/physical memory dump. This is the same thing that was happening before and it was happening with malwarebytes.

Also, what privileges do I need to change to allow the Win32Diag.exe that you had previously requested be run?

Thank You

Hi,

the message from Win32kdiag is a standard message, there is nothing to worry about. Backup privileges wasn't what we were after. If it had shown the infection I was looking after, there would have been lines similar to this one:
QUOTE
Found mount point : C:\WINDOWS\ftpcache\ftpcache

Mount point destination : \Device\__max++>\^

Please run a chkdsk and let me know if it still stops at the same file:

1. Run Chkdsk
Running chkdsk may take some time to complete. Please be patient and do not use the computer, press any keys, or try to stop the chkdsk scan once it has started.
  • Right-click the Start button and select Explore
  • Navigate to your C: Drive, then right-click the drive and select Properties
  • In the Properties window that pops-up, click the Tools tab and then click on the button that says Check Now
  • If the User Account Control window pops-up asking for permission to run Check Disk, please click on Continue
  • In the Check Disk Options window that pops-up, place a check-mark in both boxes:
    • Automatically fix file system errors
    • Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
  • Now click on Start.
  • A new window will pop-up saying, Windows can't check the disk while it's in use, click schedule disk check
  • Now shut-down your computer, not restart, and then turn on your computer.
  • When your computer turns on, you will see a blcak screen with white lettering, this is chkdsk running.
  • Let chkdsk run through its 5 Stages. When it is finished, your computer will boot to the desktop.
2. Chkdsk Log
  • Click on Start, then Run.
  • Copy and paste the following bold text in to the Open: box:
      eventvwr.msc /s
  • This will bring up the Event Viewer window
  • In the left panel click on Application
  • The chkdsk log should be the first entry, with a source of Wininit. If it is not the first log:
    • Click on View, and then on Newest First
    • This should place the chkdsk log at the top of the list.
  • Click on the entry once
  • Now right-click on the entry and choose Properties.
  • In the window that pops-up, click on (this will copy the log).
  • Paste the log in a Reply to this topic.

Hello,

OK, I ran things in the sequence you requested, but prior to that (earlier in the day) I tried to run norton again and it hung the system. It said I should run a chkdsk so i did. The error in chkdsk was something like it can't lock the drive and was running in read only mode. So I went to a dos prompt and ran chkdsk with /f option, it said it can't lock drive and Y/N to schedule on the next reboot, I said yes and then rebooted (I did a restart, not a hard shutdown/restart). I found the results in event viewer under Winlog and results follow below under "A - RESULTS FROM CHKDSK /F".

Then I re-ran norton 360, it hung on a different file but consistent for the last 3 weeks it was in windows/system32/dllcache

this time the file was digest.dll, it went to blue screen Kernel_stack_inpage_error and system dump. I then followed your instructions and went via windows explorer (I'm running xp professional). the results found in WINLOGIN are below under "B - RESULTS FROM CHKDSK INITIATED FROM WINDOWS EXPLORER".

Thank you so much, Cheers

A - RESULTS FROM CHKDSK /F

Checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Volume label is OS.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You
may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended
that you continue.
