Posted 23 August 2010 - 12:44 PM

For the previous 2 days I have noticed that when using google, yahoo or bing search engine it will automatically redirect when clicking on search links to unrelated websites. I'm also now unable to access igoogle. I have tried UnHackMe, AVG 9.0, Hitman Pro 3.5, SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes to no avail.

I really need help now!! Thanks for all your help in advance.

I ran the GMER and it doesn't bring any results. I am unable to tick all the required bopxes as they are greyed out and on start up I get a message "c:\windows\system32\config\system: The system is unable to locate the file specified"

Hi dosk, and welcome to Bleeping Computer.

Download OTL.exe by OldTimer to your Desktop.
  • Close all windows and double click OTL.exe.
  • In the "Custom Scans/Fixes" window (under the light green bar) paste the following in bold:

    netsvcs
    drivers32
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*
    %systemroot%\system32\*.wt
    %systemroot%\system32\*.ruy
    %systemroot%\Fonts\*.com
    %systemroot%\Fonts\*.dll
    %systemroot%\Fonts\*.ini
    %systemroot%\Fonts\*.ini2
    %systemroot%\Fonts\*.exe
    %systemroot%\system32\spool\prtprocs\w32x86\*.*
    %systemroot%\REPAIR\*.bak1
    %systemroot%\REPAIR\*.ini
    %systemroot%\system32\*.jpg
    %systemroot%\*.jpg
    %systemroot%\*.png
    %systemroot%\*.scr
    %systemroot%\*._sy
    %APPDATA%\Adobe\Update\*.*
    %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Favorites\*.*
    %APPDATA%\Microsoft\*.*
    %PROGRAMFILES%\*.*
    %APPDATA%\Update\*.*
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %PROGRAMFILES%|bak;true;false;false /fp
    %systemroot%\system32|bak;true;false;false /fp
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\Results\Install|LastSuccessTime /rs

  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two Notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL. Post both logs in this thread.
  • You may need to use two posts to get it all.

Hi again dosk!!.. smile.gif

Firstly,
Please run OTL.exe.
  • Copy the commands with file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :OTL
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - No CLSID value found.
O4 - HKLM..\RunOnceEx: [Flags] Reg Error: Invalid data type. File not found
    O4 - HKLM..\RunOnceEx: [Title] File not found
    :Commands
    [EmptyTemp]
    [EMPTYFLASH]
    [RESETHOSTS]

  • Return to OTL.exe, right click in the "Custom Scans/Fixes" window (under the light green bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Run Fix button.
  • A fix log in Notepad will appear. Copy the contents of the fix log to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTL.exe
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Secondly,
You're using a router, it seems... It's possible it got hijacked (hence, you're experiencing these redirects)...
Please read my article here: Routers - security, then (after disconnecting other machines from the router) reset it back to the factory default settings, and change the username/password on your router...

Post the OTL fix log, perform the router reset (and change username/password), and let me know if the problem persist...

I'm glad to see that!!.. smile.gif
Could you confirm that the problem was solved after resetting a router??.. Are there any other machines connected to this router??.. Would you like to check them (if any malware hides)??..

We need to update outdated programs (with security vulnerabilities) on your machine:

- Adobe Acrobat Reader:

You're using an old version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, this can leave your PC open to vulnerabilities...
Run Adobe Reader --> Help --> Check for updates - let it update to the newest version - 9.3.4

- Java

Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Programs and Features, highlight a program to see the available option on the toolbar for it. Choose Uninstall for:
Java™ 6 Update 14

Then,
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "JDK 6 Update 21 (JDK or JRE)".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select Windows, your Language, check the "agree" box and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your Desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u21-windows-i586.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.

- Adobe Flash Player:

To make sure you have the latest version of Adobe Flash Player installed:
1. To uninstall an older version, download this file to your Desktop: uninstall_flash_player.exe
2. Quit ALL running applications, including all Internet Explorer or other browser windows, and messenger applications (like AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger.
3. Double-click on the file you've downloaded to uninstall Flash.
4. If uninstalled successfully, go to this site: Install Adobe Flash Player, and choose Agree and install now. This will install the newest version of Flash for your browser (note: Flash plugins for IE and Firefox must be installed separately).
Note: I recommend you uncheck an optional install (Free McAfee Security Scan or Free Google Toolbar).

Hi again,

I've reset everything as suggested and installed the updated programs. It still seems to be working well.

I have one other machine which doesn't seem to have a problem at the moment. Is it worth checking anyway?

Thanks again for your help!

Scott

I think that running a scan with MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware on that machine is a good idea... Infection which hijacked the router had to infect a PC first... I'm not sure if only this Windows 7 64bit machine was infected, only that other machine or both... So, to be on the safe side, I'd certainly run that scan with MBAM... You can copy & paste the results for me to see, if you wish...

For this Windows 7 64bit machine:

Firstly,
To remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created do the following:
Double click OTL.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes.
Note: If any tool, file or folder (belonging to the program we have used) hasn't been deleted, please delete it manually.

Secondly,
Please set a new Restore Point to prevent infection from any previous Restore Points. The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the Restore Point a name then click "Create". The new Restore Point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Go to "Disk Cleanup" which can be found by going to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools.
  • Click "OK" to select the partition or drive you desire.
  • Click the "More Options" Tab.
  • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous Restore Points except the newly created one. More details and screenshots for Disk Cleanup in Windows Vista can be found here and for Windows 7 here.

Please check my site - snemelk.hekko.pl:
Also, I recommend you to read Grinler's excellent article: How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!
