I recently purchased a system from Systemax, and have not been able to play any games for more than twenty minutes, or use visualizations in iTunes, Winamp, etc, or do anything else using Directx/D3D (haven't tried OpenGL). The screen displays "No Digital Input" briefly and goes black, the sound sometimes loops, and the system sometimes reboots if i wait about a minute, or else locks up. If the system reboots, it does not display anything, beeps three times (one long and two short, i think, but i'm not sure), and seems to boot normally, aside from having no video. I have to turn the power off via the power button or the power supply switch to get video back - crtl-alt-del and the reset button don't work. I have tried removing/disabling all sound and moving my sound card(suggested by a FAQ because of the looping sound), updating my sound, display, and motherboard drivers and DirectX (9.0c), updating my BIOS, reseating my video card, moving my monitor cable to my VCs other DVI port, and disabling sound and advanced video options (like antialiasing) in DirectX and in the games. I've also checked the VCs fan (it works) and the heatsink on the VC is barely warmer than skin temp at crashing. I called Systemax and was told, after describing what I had tried, that I may need to get another video card. Before i do, i need to know if there is some no-brainer that I have missed.

Sys Config:
MSI Neo4-F Ultra mobo
AMD Athlon 64 X2
2GB Dual Channel DDR400 RAM (1GB x2)
Creative Audigy ZS Platinum
BFG GeForce 6800 256MB PCI-E

Oh, yes, the onboard sound is disabled, and i have set all overclocking options to default/off settings.

Also, if i need a new mobo, will Dual Channel RAM work in a mobo without Dual Channel support?

Thanks for your help,
John

Two updates to my problem, if they help:

1. The beep code when I allow automatic resart or use reset is definitely on long and two short.

2. The complete DxDiag output, mainly to show system config (all tests were successful):

Thanks. I'm buying a new ATI card today anyway, and i should get it in 3-5 working days. I'll let you know if it fixes (or not) the problem.

Thanks again,
John

I am amazed that someone else is having this problem. I have the ATI vid card tho and unlike yours it seems to burn up. I have gone through two replacement cards because I thought that was where the problem was. Anyway, I will post the extent of my problem in a new post. but I wanted to let you know I have a very similar problem and let me tell you...it ain't the vid card in my case.

I hope it is the vid card for me - i should have a new one ariving Monday. . BTW, a hot vid card can lock up, either when it tries to slow down it's clock or when it just plain overheats. You may have the PCI-E bus overclocked, or need another case fan (if you have space on the case). First check the BIOS by pressing the key to enter Setup (usually the Delete just above the arrows, but this can vary - watch the boot screen) and looking for something like "Cell Menu" or something with "Overclock" in the name. There may be something under "PnP/PCI Config" that may help. Check each of these for something to do with "PCI-E Bus Speed" and lower the value. Also try to find GPU or VPU clock settings in the Catalyst software (i don't know if this can be changed, but it's worth a try). If this doesn't help, see if you have any fan jumpers on you motherboard. They'll be labeled FANx or SFANx (x usually is 1). If you do, you can buy a fan with the same number of pins as the fan jumper. If not, you'll also need an adapter for the power supply. I know you probobly know (and have tried) all this already, but i don't know your skill level, so it doesn't hurt to provide the extra info.

Good luck,
John

I would check the obvious first..............take the vid card out and reseat it, check the pci-e molex is plugged into the back of the card (not sure if the pci-e version of your card has one?).
Then do a CLEAN install of the vid drivers as follows................go to nvidia.com and download the latest drivers (81.85 i believe), next download driver cleaner PE from here http://www.drivercleaner.net/ and place it on your desktop. Now uninstall your display drivers via the Windows control panel (only the display drivers!!) and reboot into safe mode. Once in safe mode, open driver cleaner, click tools and select "cab cleaner", click start and wait till it's finished. When finished click close, next select nvidia in the drop down box and start.
Once finished, reboot into normal windows mode and install your new drivers. DO NOT let windows do it for you via the wizard, shut the wizard and double click your driver file that your downloaded from nvidia.

I have pulled my hair out before because of old corrupted files left behind by nvidia/ATI when you install new drivers, the above method sorts this out.

If after all of this you are still getting problems, then check your power supply. Your system should require 400watts+ with atleast 20amps on the +12 volt rail to run smoothly........all this info is on the side of your power supply.

Chief.

P.S. what are your current vid card temps at idle and at load (when it crashes)?

I've tried everything but the driver cleaner, and checking the PS. It's only 350W, and came with the system as it's now configured. If I have to buy a new PS, i'll see if i can get Systemax accept a return on the 350W because it's not adequate for the system it's in, and there was no upgrade option for it. I've also downloaded the driver cleaner to my secondary machine, but i can't do anything with it until my main system finishes downloading about 600 FreeBSD packages and i configure the bootloader. Also, i'm upgrading to a new ATI card anyway, because it has more features (including CrossFire, if i get a new motherboard) and (IMO) better graphics, and i'm get a second case fan (more cooling never hurts).

Thanks,
John

Hey John,
Thanks for the tips! I tried some of it. Didn't solve anything, but like some others have told me, my PS is probably inadequate (I have a 350 Watt too) . Tomorrow i am getting a 500 PS and getting yet another fan...hmmmm maybe I should put an additional wattage to power the fan..heheh
Anyway, I'll let you know how it goes.
Good luck with your bleeping computer!

Have you tried updating the motherboard drivers with the latest from MSI?

Looks like everything is OK with DirectX and the video card, and the beep code seems to indicate video card issues.

Are you having to press the F1 key to continue the boot? if so, please try updating the motherboard drivers.
The name says it all -- 59 and holding permanently

I updated the drivers when i updated the BIOS. I haven't had to press F1, and i think it continues to boot even when it can't seem to find the video card because the hard drive is accessed in the same pattern that it normally is when it boots.

Thanks for your suggestions,
John

I think i'm getting a new PS too. Just need to get a little extra cash. BTW, i forgot to ask if the cards you've used had a power connector at the back, and if it was connected to a working plug on the PS. If not, that can cause overheating. 'Tho, you installed three of 'em before, so doubt i have to ask. (Checked mine, it wasn't a problem)

Hope you get it fixed (if only so you can tell me how  ),
John

Just remember, watts do not equal power. You can have a 800watt PSU but it may only have 15amps on the +12 volt rail. Get a well known make/model with atleast +20amps on the +12 volts rail. The PSU is the backbone of your computer, you may have the best of everything but if the PSU isn't up to it, then your system will suck, or worse cause damage. Another thing to watch out for is the so called ATX 2.0 which many PSU manufacturers claim to comply with, when in fact they don't. Most pci-e boards are ATX 2.0 (should have a 24 pin socket to connect to the motherboard not 20), Don't quote me here but i believe the extra 4 pins are for delivering clean power to the pci-e port. Easy way to check is look at the biggest chunk of wires coming out of your PSU, this should have a 24 pin plug at the end and NOT a 20 pin with a 24pin adaptor.

The following brand names comply with ATX 2.0 when clearly stated on the box, Antec, Enermax, OCZ, PC power&colling, silverstone etc.

Also please let me know your vid card temps.........what they are when your computer first boots up (after being switched off for more than an hour), then what they are after 10 mintues of normal Windows operation (idle) then what they are after playing a 3D game with all the settings on high for atleast 5 mins (load).
Your card should be anywhere between 35-65 degrees C at idle and could go as high as 75-90 at full load.

I expect you already know this but to find your vid card temps, right click anywhere on the desktop, choose properties, settings, advanced, geforce 6800, and in the fly out tab to the left click temperature settings.

The PS is an Allied C350ATX, doesn't mention whether it's ATX 2.0 or not, but it does have a sticker claiming it's "AMD Listed", if that actually means anything. The mobo connector on it has 24 pins, and is all one piece, and has no wire looping between pins, so I assume there's no adapter. However, the +12V Amps doesn't quite make it (19 Amps, almost but not quite), the 5V and 3.3V are both 28 Amps.

As for vid card tems, they're usually:

Boot: 28-32C (Off overnight)
Idle: 40-44C
Gaming: 55-63C

I've never seen it go above 63C.

In any case, it's a moot point, as my new vide card arrived yesterday, and i've spent about twelve hours testing it. So far, it has performed flawlessly (not to mention clearer, sharper graphics and color than the nVidai had, and the games are actually more responsive  ).

I think i mentioned, i'm probably getting another PS anyway, just to be safe, but for now, i've got everything working.

Thanks for everyones help,
John
