I downloaded Avira Antivir and was going to go to safe mode as suggested to start the procedure of self helping my computer problem. When asked for my user account name, I cannot type it in, it will not accept anything and will not let me log on in safe mode.

EDIT: Merged threads and moved to Am I Infected forum from XP ~ Hamluis.

System manufacturer and model?

Why are you trying to boot into safe mode?

Why are installing Avira AV...at this time?

What computer problem...do you have?

Guessing that you are using a usb keyboard.
If there is a ps2 keyboard port and you have an older ps2 keyboard, try that.

Are you sure they are asking about your user account name and not your password?

Usually when you reach that point it will show you the option of Administrator or your chosen name and you click on your name to continue.

If it does ask for a password and you haven't assigned one you can just click on Enter to continue.

At various times while browsing and using email I get a Not Responding in the upper left hand corner. Frequently enough to be a pain. I have scanned for virus, found some and were quarantined, malware, spyware, etc. What next ?

I eliminated the password and it went into Safe Mode. Interestingly enough, after doing the anti-malware anti-virus, etc. in regular mode, Safe Mode didn't find anything. Everthing was already found in regular mode, so why do it in Safe Mode ???

You have another thread here
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic343111.html
with what appears to be a similar issue

I would definitely say that you are still infected with something

In reguard to the questions asked by Louis
If staff at BC, particulary a moderator, ask questions it is because we need to clarify the issue

I have requested that both posts be merged and possibly moved to the Am I Infected forum
In the beginning there was the command line.
