My virus software ::: Bell Internet Security Services keeps finding a virus in C:\Windows\explorer.exe and failing to disinfect it. It then shuts me out of opeing any explorer type window with the error message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the file". If I shutdown my Bell Internet Security then I can access explorer windows again. Bell also keeps detecting a virus in C:\Windows\System32\wininit.exe that it cannot disinfect. No other virus software, Malwarebytes or Superantispyware detects these.

Also, I can't access my registry... when I try and run regedit.exe I get a message "C:\WIndows\regedit.exe is not a valid Win32 application"

I ran dds.scr but gmer.exe keeps crashing my computer (Windows Vista Home Edition 32 bit). I wouldly greatly appreciate any help with this.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  1. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  2. Do not Attach logs unless I ask you to.
  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.
  6. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!

Hi , I ran Combofix

Right away I get "System file is infected !! Attempting to restore "C"\Windows\regedit.exe"

It hangs on that for 20 minutes
then just skips to "attempting to create a restore point
then "C:\Combofix\REGT.cfxxe is not a valid win32 application"
then "access denied"
then stages 1 to 50
then it hangs again on "System file is infected !! Attempting to restore "C:\Windows\System32\SetIEInstalledDate.exe" for another 20 minutes
then I get multiple messages of the form "C:\Combofix\REGT.cfxxe is not a valid win32 application" before
Combofix reboots my PC.
Combofix doesn't restart itself after reboot and never asked me to save a log file.

I don't have the Vista disk you talk about only the product key

Hello

I would like you to run combofix in safe mode and if combofix reboots the machine to pease go back into safe mode so it can complete the scan

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

If you cannot find your Vista recovery disk or your Vista upgrade I need you to make one, You can follow the instructions >here< and make a new one Please let me know when you have it ready and also give me the report combofix makes

I ran Combofix in safe mode and I got the exact same result except...

windows hung with the "logging off" screen and wouldn't shut down on it's own. I had to turn off the power button on the computer. Then I went back in safe mode and Combofix wouldn't start on its own. It seems made a file on my Desktop named catchme.log and in it had the location of two files in big font

File "C:\ComboFix\MT_wininit.exe.tmp" added successfully
File "C:\ComboFix\MT_explorer.exe.tmp" added successfully

I am in the process of downloading the vista recovery disk now and then will burn it and get back to you

Thanks again

hello

after you have the repair disk burned and ready do the following

Run Batch File
Open Notepad and copy/paste the entire contents of the codebox below, into Notepad:
CODE
@echo off
copy /y C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\cde11068f5b77b180111333ef9781925\x86_microsoft-windows-explorer_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6002.18005_none_53a0201e76de3a0b\explorer.exe c:\

del %0
Save this as copy.bat Choose to Save type as - All Files and where to save - Desktop - then close the Notepad file.

      cd C:\WINDOWS
      ren explorer.exe explorer.old
      copy c:\explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS
      cd c:\windows\system32
      ren wininit.exe.exe wininit.exe.old
      copy c:\wininit.exe.exe c:\windows\system32
      exit
8.Remove the Vista Installation DVD and restart your PC.
If you are unsure where the spaces are check this
    cd[SPACE]C:\WINDOWS
    ren[SPACE]explorer.exe[SPACE]explorer.old
    copy[SPACE]c:\explorer.exe[SPACE]C:\WINDOWS
    cd[SPACE]c:\windows\system32

I should have mentioned that everytime i ran Combofix I got the following

"System file is infected !! Attempting to restore "C:\Windows\explorer.exe
succesfully restored!"

"System file is infected !! Attempting to restore "C:\Windows\System32\wininit.exe
succesfully restored!"

but then when I reboot my antivirus software detects an infection in both files again

Should I continue with the Vista Recovery procedures? I have the disc ready to go.

I get into console and I have

x:\>Sources as my prompt

I type "cd c:\windows" and nothing happens, I still have x:\>Sources as my prompt

then I type "ren explorer.exe explorer.old" and press enter and I get an error saying file not found or something.

and can you confirm it is wininit.exe.exe and not wininit.exe

OK but I still have the problem with the prompts

I go into console and I have

"x:\Sources" as my prompt

I type "cd C:\WINDOWS" and nothing happens and I still have "X:\Sources" as my prompt
then I type "ren explorer.exe explorer.old" and I get an error "File not found"

Aren't I suppoed to be moving files from drive X: to drive C:?
