I recently reformatted our Dell Vostro 1500. The pc runs fine except for the DVD. The pc can play an audio cd and read data from a cd rom. When we put a dvdi n. we get the following message:

"Windows media player cannot play this DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer."

Device manager looks ok under CD/DVD w/ no error message. Any suggestion on how to fix this?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Windows Media Player can't, by itself, play DVDs; it needs an additional, usually non-free, plugin.

Alternatively, you can use VLC instead. It's a free media player that plays pretty much everything in existence.

You'd need an MPEG-2 decoder: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsme...aspx#DVDDecoder
