Hello,

My computer has been infected with the tidserv trojan and something called suspicious.mystic. I noticed it last night. Norton detected it and claimed it had been quarantined, but apparently that was just the beginning.

Now, when I turn on the computer, I get a blank screen and cannot see any icons, start bar etc.

So, I am asking for your help. I will respond to any posts that you make here. However, the problem is that I cannot access internet on the computer that is infected. So, it will be a matter of checking posts at work, downloading any programs you request, adding them to a USB and then taking that home and following your instructions.

I have Windows XP 2000. Not sure of the hardware specifications at the moment as I am not close to the infected computer.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Hello,

I am adding the log. Sorry for the omission earlier.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs

    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hello myrti,

Thanks very much for your reply.

Problem

I have no icons on my desktop, and no start bar. I can open programs from the task manager, but I am not able to access files.

However, I am able to access the internet despite what I stated in my opening post.

From Task Manager, if I click New Task (Run...) and enter "explorer.exe" the response is that "Windows cannot find explorer.exe."

Since Posting

I have done a number of things since my first post:

Installed and ran Malwarebytes. The results indicate that these were removed:

numerous rootkit.dropper

Later, during another scan:
  • Trojan.Hiloti.Gen
  • Heuristics.Shuriken
  • Hijack.user.init
  • numerous rootkit.dropper
  • numerous trojan.downloader
  • a few trojan.agent
Subsequent Malwarebytes scans have not turned up anything.

Further:
  • I have installed and run tdssskiller. I forget what it removed. Once I make this post, I will go back and see if I can determine what it removed. I don't want to risk starting a program and losing what I have posted so far.
  • I have removed Norton and installed a trial version of Kaspersky (not sure what it flagged in scan: I will try to locate that info).
  • Also, I recall that a number of VBSN worms have been removed. Forget which program did that.
  • I downloaded gmer but it always froze up and was unable to run.
  • I have done an sfc/scannow a few times.
The OTL log files are as follows:

Hi,

sfc did not bring explorer back? That is surprising.

Please try running scan with rootkit unhooker:
Please download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your Desktop
  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE to run it
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest
  • Click OK
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report
  • Save the report to your Desktop
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

regards myrti

Hi myrti,

No, sfc did not bring it back!

When you mentioned to download Rootkit Unhooker, I remembered that I had already downloaded it after this all started. I forget what the results were.

However, now when I try to run it, it won't open and I receive this message: Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

Nor can I open another version after I download it to my desktop. Also, I don't seem able to uninstall it and try again. I went to Add or Remove programs and couldn't find it there to uninstall, nor could I see it in Program Files when going through Task Manager.

Thanks again.

please download a new copy, before saving it to your PC rename it to fun.com and let me know if you can then run it.

Hi myrti,

I tried your suggestion but I received the same message when I tried to open the program.

I await further instructions.

Thanks.

Hello myrti,

I was eventually able to run Rootkit Unhooker. The problem had been that Kaspersky had flagged it as an unsafe application.

Here are the results:

Hi

thanks for letting me know about kaspersky and rootkit unhooker. I will see what I can do about this.

Please run combofix next:
Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:

Hi myrti,

I downloaded ComboFix and followed your instructions. During the scan, a dialog box popped up saying that ComboFix had found rootkit activity and needed to reboot. I clicked Yes, though nothing happened for some time.

I waited a while and tried to shut down through task manager but the machine froze. So I turned off and restarted.

So, shall I run ComboFix again?

Also, I should notify you that regarding all the save log requests, I am not able to access files after saving. I am just copying the original log when it pops up after the scan is complete.

Is there a way to access specific files through task manager or command prompt?

Hi,

yes please try to run it again. Hopefully, once ComboFix has run we will get good older explorer back. If not you can open the log from ComboFix by running the following command in taskmanager or command line: notepad C:\combofix.txt.

Hi myrti,

I have tried running ComboFix twice more but have had the same results. Starts running, and displays the dialog box about detecting rootkit activity and needs to reboot.

Could it perhaps be locating the various quarantined rootkits that had been taken out by various other programs? Or does it mean that my computer is still infected?

Thanks for any help.

Hi,

ComboFix only goes after active infections. So I'll guess that you are still infected.Let's target one of the infections first:

We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    userinit.exe
    csrss.exe
    hlp.dat
    /md5stop
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
regards myrti

OK, thanks myrti. I ran OTL. However, I only see one log, unlike last time when there were two log files. Any ideas why? Anyway, here are the main results:

Hi,

this is looking pretty good. Please go here: C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache and copy explorer.exe and drop it into C:\windows. Let me know if you then get your taskbars back by typing explorer into command line or task manager.

Please also run TDSSKiller:
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.
  • Go to Start > Run (Or you can hold down your Windows key and press R) and copy and paste the following into the text field. (make sure you include the quote marks) Then press OK.

    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l C:\TDSSKiller.txt

  • If it says "Hidden service detected" DO NOT type anything in. Just press Enter on your keyboard to not do anything to the file.
  • When it is done, a log file should be created on your C: drive called "TDSSKiller.txt" please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!
